"a shot heard round the world": Crazy Bernie praises Bezos for raising Amazon workers minimum wage

Dunno if anyone quoted this already or not, but Peter Schiff said this yesterday:

"Bezos is no fool. He will reduce his headcount, and step up his automation effort to eliminate as many low-skilled jobs from Amazon. Then he will lobby Congress to increase the minimum wage for his competitors that still employ lower-skilled workers. As these competitors will lack the resources to automate, they will be driven out of business, and all their workers will lose their jobs. Less competition will make it easier for Amazon to raise prices."

He's probably spot on. Amazon/Bezos recently freaked out about a head tax implemented in Seattle, which caused them to repeal it.

This is a business move.

Agree with what Bezos did or not...it's a brilliant strategic move.

With one decision, he quickly gets everyone off of his back about his wages while - at the same time - forcing other companies/corporations (who cannot absorb the added costs as easily as Amazon can) to follow suit.

Bezos will now undoubtedly be leading the charge for a $15/hr. minimum wage nationwide. The faster his competitors have to massively raise their labor costs, the faster many of them will go under from the financial burden...thus increasing Amazon's supremacy when it takes up the slack.

This move will almost certainly hurt Amazon's bottom line in the short term...but probably help it over the long term. Perhaps greatly.

I told my wife last night - “If anything you buy on Amazon, or any service you get from them, goes up even $0.01; you get it somewhere else... even if it’s more expensive.”

I will not support a company that artificially inflates pay beyond what the employees deserve. An employee who was making $7.25 yesterday doesn’t deserve $15.00 today simply for political grandstanding.
Yep, Someone somewhere will have to pay for that ridiculousness.
There are many jobs such as service jobs that do not deserve anything more than seven dollars an hour. Because they are not careers, they will never be careers they are just beginners jobs/service jobs....

Fed min wage is 7 an hour? wow that's criminal.

Hourly and salary are tough for me, I like commissions, my own business, greater risk and greater rewards, I like playing it safe and trusting myself.

And I am the opposite, the reward I am getting is more than enough and there is just about no risk at all. When I leave work, I leave work. I do not have to think about it or any of the associated issues that come with either running your own business or being in charge of a group of people. I did enough of that in the Marines, I chose my current profession and job to avoid leadership and worries.

When I am driving away from work my biggest worry is if I can sneak in 9 holes before I need to start dinner! At this stage of my life I would not trade this for anything. I turned down higher paying jobs as I knew the demands on my time would be greater.

That sounds like you found your perfect job, I love how we are all different and enjoy different things. I hate golf, however I love to cook.

Those jobs are nothing jobs... They certainly are not careers. They should never be meant to be careers....

Spoken like somebody who has no idea about the new labour market.

You keep using that word, but you truly do not know what it means. Nobody has put forth more socialist views in this thread than you have
Socialism is for fuck ups and parasites

Yet, you seem to be the only socialist in this thread.

If other businesses are hurt by this then the fact is they shouldn't be hiring so hopefully they don't expand. Either be able to keep up with Amazon or close up shop. Doesn't bother me either way. Too bad so sad. Run your company the right way. Derps.

Since when is 15 lousy dollars per hour such a great wage? Can't live on it comfortably i don't care where you live.

Most people would prefer a set pay amount instead of relying on bonuses which were hit and miss. The problem with bonuses is they are not a sure thing and you cannot plan around them, or you should not at least.

I do love how your rubes see the word "could" as in "could make some..." and take it as an established fact.

I'd take my chances with bonuses. That works for me however some don't like that way of working.

Relying on bonuses is like relying on OT, sooner or later they do not show up and then you are screwed.

Based upon the article that Eugene Kim wrote, nobody will make less money.

Amazon's hourly workers lose monthly bonuses and stock awards as minimum wage increases

The confirmation follows multiple reports on Wednesday that some of Amazon's warehouse employees say they will make less as a result of this change. The Guardian said warehouse workers currently receive one Amazon share (worth $1,959) at the end of every year, on top of another single share reward every five years. Yahoo Newsnoted that warehouse workers can earn up to 8 percent of their monthly income every month, which could be as much as $3,000 a year for some workers. Workers were notified of the change on Wednesday, according to Bloomberg.

Amazon disclosed in its announcement on Tuesday that it is replacing the stock awards program with the minimum-wage increase because employees prefer the "predictability and immediacy of cash" compared with stock awards. The company also noted that it was "phasing out the incentive pay component," in an answer to a question phrased as "Is it required to hit any incentive targets in order to get the $15 minimum wage?"

When I got bonuses, I never missed a bonus, give me the rules and I can play the game. I love the commission game more than any other game, other than owning my own business it paid the best. I hate hourly, it is to limiting.

It depends on what the bonuses are based upon, often there are factors outside of your control that impact them.

I like the annual salary route, I know exactly how much each and every paycheck will be, there is no guessing or wondering.

Hourly and salary are tough for me, I like commissions, my own business, greater risk and greater rewards, I like playing it safe and trusting myself.
/——/ I left safe and secure salaried sales jobs at P&G and J&J for straight commission jobs in legal publishing and tripled my income,

/——/ We paid our employees what we could afford, if they said someone else paid more we’d say go for it. That usually put an end to it, the other employers will just say, go work for Amazon. Our job pays $12 or whatever. Amazon can’t hire everyone.
