The space opera genre used to be popular. In the 1990s-2000s we had shows like Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, Firefly, Farscape, and Star Trek. For a while the genre seems to have died on TV. No current shows take place aboard a spaceship.
Now Guardians of the Galaxy has been a huge success. It is the highest grossing movie of 2014. Can this movie along with movies like Interstellar and Jupiter Ascending start a revival for the space opera genre? We also have the new Star Wars movie. On top of that there are plans for a Mass Effect movie.
SyFy finally got its head out of its behind and is giving us the Expanse. FX is making John Scalzi's Redshirts a limited series.
On the video game front we have No Man's Sky and Star Citizen. Bioware is developing a new Mass Effect game.
Will the 2010s be the decade of the space opera?
