Climate models are often accused of not reflecting the complex nature of our magnetosphere, atmosphere and planet. A recent study now states that a massive hole in the ozone layer that has existed since the 1980s was just discovered. The hole effects some 50% of the planet and warns that it will have a negative effect on humans and the ecosystem.

Can climate models be considered "settled science" when something like a massive hole in the ozone hasn't been accounted for?

"The discovery of the whole-year ozone hole over the tropics came as a surprise to the scientific community, since it was not predicted by conventional photochemical models."
....
"Its existence could cause a serious global concern as it can lead to increases in ground-level UV radiation and affect 50% of Earth’s surface area, which is home to approximately 50% of the world’s population."

"Moreover, since ozone loss is well-known to lead to stratospheric cooling, the presence of the all-season tropical ozone hole and the seasonal polar ozone holes is equivalent to the formation of three ‘temperature holes’ in the global lower stratosphere."

I love it, the ozone hole could cause all sorts of havoc.

It hasn't in 40 years, but throw money at us and we will figure out some more things that it might possibly could do that would be really bad and we need to control even more what people can do because.......welll, we like power and we like telling people what to do.

In this article it states the person behind the claim could be wrong…

An opinion without supporting research to refute the findings isn't worth much.

My understanding is that the researcher that discovered this massive hole in the ozone in fact published his findings in January 2022 for all his peers to see and in the past seven months none of his peers have come forward to refute his findings.

Upon a closer reading of this paper ... the researchers were trying to demonstrate "the cosmic-ray-driven electron-induced-reaction (CRE) model" of ozone depletion ... something along the lines of the CLOUD experiment at CERN ...

It's certainly smarter to study cosmic ray effects in the Stratosphere than in the Troposphere ... [rolls eyes] ... skin cancer will kill everyone before climate change can ... so what's the worry about CO2? ...

Despite periodic reports of ozone depletion little is written of the impact the ozone layer has on our climate. Here is a piece of research that was written back in 2011 when it was thought that ozone depletion could be reversed:

"There are strong interactions between ozone depletion and changes in climate induced by increasing greenhouse gases (GHGs). Ozone depletion affects climate, and climate change affects ozone."
....
"Strong interactions between ozone depletion and climate change and uncertainties in the measurements and models limit our confidence in predicting the future UV radiation. It is therefore important to improve our understanding of the processes involved, and to continue monitoring ozone and surface UV spectral irradiances both from the surface and from satellites so we can respond to unexpected changes in the future."

The new paper isn't regarded as good science.

Basically, the guy redefined what an ozone hole is so he could say he found a new ozone hole.

You are funny.

The ozone protects us from UV rays. Surf the web and it is obvious that UV levels have been rising. Here are just a few articles from different parts of the world underling the problem of rising UV levels:

.

These days we recycle refrigerant gases. What's causing the hole in the ozone?

One of many research papers point to volcanic influence:

I'm sure you're right about that.

And just a few more articles to consider regarding rising UV levels:

"UV levels have been rising" is a totally different claim from "there is a tropical ozone hole".

It takes decades for the old gases to go away.

Plus, as usual, China has been cheating.
