IDs can be faked, forged, or substituted with other people's IDs.

Background checks require quite a bit more.

OK, how about this:

Voter ID's are fine, as long as the state government that requires them to be presented does the following:

1. issue IDs to the voters free of charge
2. provide transportation to and from any facility they need to go to in order to procure said IDs, and
3. makes absolutely sure all voters have a reasonable amount of time to procure said IDs between the time the law is passed requiring them, and the next election.

If those procedures are followed, then a voter ID is not a poll tax, or a gimmick to stop people from voting, and is fair.

If they are not followed, then the state in question is interfering with the citizen's right to vote, and is therefore in violation of the Constitution.

1. As far as I know, every state that requires a voter ID makes provisions to issue an ID without charge.
2. Ever here of public transportation?
3. I think the fact that they are written so as not to go into effect until a year after they are signed pretty much covers that.

I guess this means you have no objection to voter ID laws.

At the very least, it would provide a mechanism to identify and prosecute criminals who illegally obtain guns, while allowing law-abiding average citizens to own them without being hassled about it.

How will it do that? What if a gun was purchased legally before the registration law? What if the gun was bought in the 1800s? Guns, with proper care, last a long time.

I can see the need for background checks and waiting periods.

Background checks are perfectly appropriate; waiting periods, not. Waiting periods represent a burdensome presumption of guilt, in addition to not working. Many who committed crimes with guns did so after a waiting period.

However, in return, there should be no need for gun licenses, and open carry laws should be the norm everywhere, except on private property where the owner doesn't allow it of course.

The bolded is an interesting observation. In Florida legislation was recently passed that disallowed private property owners from prohibiting firearms on their property when the owners of the firearms held a carry permit. The issue put many conservatives in quite a bind, torn between the sanctity of private property ownership and the hallowed Second Amendment.

Right wingers want a higher level of proof and eligibility on the right to vote than to purchase assault rifles with 30 shot clips.

Voter ID laws and many restrictions on firearms are equally offensive to the Constitution.

Requiring photo id, for many, is an unreasonable demand. The elderly, innercity poor, and rural poor may not have photo id. They probably have a voter registration card, which ought to be sufficient. Hell, in your own state a phone bill is sufficient identification.

Cashing a check is a private transaction. Voting is a civil right. Your analogy makes no sense.

If I go to vote without ID, my right to vote is blocked. That is as unconstitutional as going to buy a gun and being told you can't because you're bat shit crazy.

Yet you are 100% in favour of one and not the other.
