According to NPR, “In 2003, a survey of female veterans found that 30 percent said they were raped in the military. A 2004 study of veterans who were seeking help for post-traumatic stress disorder found that 71 percent of the women said they were sexually assaulted or raped while serving. And a 1995 study of female veterans of the Gulf and earlier wars, found that 90 percent had been sexually harassed.”

The BBC recently reported on The Lonely Soldier: The Private War of Women Serving in Iraq by Helen Benedict. This book examines the extreme difficulties female soldiers have in serving abroad. Benedict interviewed several women in the military to get a deeper understanding of the issue, and some of their stories were real eye openers.

Army specialist Chantelle Henneberry spoke of some of her experiences in Iraq, “Everybody’s supposed to have a battle buddy in the army, and females are supposed to have one to go to the latrines with, or to the showers – that’s so you don’t get raped by one of the men on your own side. But because I was the only female there, I didn’t have a battle buddy. My battle buddy was my gun and my knife.”

Another study concluded that 90% of all women serving are sexually harassed. Another one estimates that 90% of all the rapes do not get reported, despite supposedly easier ways to report the crime with confidentiality since 2005. Either way, this appears to be an epidemic that needs to be dealt with.

That's low compared to the 70s and 80s...Things must be improving.

Funny I served 16 years in the Marine Corps and with women and NEVER once met one that claimed to be raped and only a couple that claimed to be harassed.

But of course. Because they don't admit it to you, it must of never had happened.

My ex girlfriend gets a disability pension from the V.A. due to an assault upon her back in the mid 80's while stationed in Germany.(I helped her in obtaining it upon hearing her story)

Is that something you talk about in casual conversation? Or are you suggesting it doesn't happen?

I remember standing with another GI and he suddenly yelled out, pointing to a female GI that was coming out of the building across the street, "Hey, look at the tits on that bitch". I turned around and it was a girl I had gone bowling with and who went to the movies with me. She never talked to me again. I told the guy what an ass he was and he said, "Oh come on, she LIKED it". I asked him if he would like it if someone yelled that out to his sister or mother and he absolutely didn't see a connection.
So he thought he had given a girl a complement AND had no idea that was sexual harassment. I bet he's now a Republican. He talked with that accent.

I've always said women don't belong in the military for a TON of reasons. A lot of men argue with that but I don't care, police, firemen, troops...If I call the police because my house is being broken into by a huge thug and a woman shows up, I'm gonna be ticked off. I can shoot straight too, what I need is that aggressive male mind to take control of the situation with the shoulders to back it up. Same thing on the battleground. And I don't think the scent of Chanel #5 in a life or death situation is going to help matters.

This is not to say that any woman in the military is at fault. Far from it. But it's still a BAD PLAN. I've never been in the military but (forgive me if I'm wrong) but it seems like the military is geared toward football locker-room mentality...women probably wouldn't fare well there either

I was a Leader. A Section head, a Maintenance Chief, A Company Gunny and ran Enlisted and Officer single Housing for a year. And NEVER once did any female ever come to me and tell me they were sexually assaulted. I was an Instructor on an Army Base for 4 years where for a while I was in charge of the Troop Barracks that is the only time anyone ever came to me with a sexual Harassment complaint. I got her in touch with the right people though I doubt it went far since she had all kind of discipline problems and was accusing the guy that had my job before me. The one that had to write all her idiotic problems up. That was also where I knew the other Army female that claimed harassment ohh and also racism. Of course her problem was complicated by the fact she was claiming the Instructor was racist against orientals and his wife was oriental.

I knew who she was because we got instructed to NEVER be in a room alone with her. She tried to corner me once. I got up and went into the hallway to have our discussion.

Wow, a self sexist. :eusa_eh:

Yes, the women should leave the military because the men just won't stop raping them. It's not like we should do anything about the men. :cuckoo:

As a direct troop leader I was the first person they would have come too. As a troop leader I would have heard of any complaints in the Command in Staff meetings.

So based on your own experiences, therefore all the women are either liars, attention whores, or these numbers doesn't really exist? :eusa_eh:

pathetic

Not surprised about the harrassment, pretty much if you are a women you will be harrassed by at one person from the workplace. I was the only women on a maintenance crew for awhile, just say men are dogs. You just learn to ignore it, and in some cases throw it back at them.

Someone is making numbers up from my experience yes.

Maybe women should just cease to exist altogether. After all, even in civilian life the incidence of rape is rather high.
