Your Government Owes You a Job

If your govt is cuba, venezuela, nicaragua, north korea, russia or china perhaps.....those progressive utopias will surely open their collective arms for another "revolucionary" marxist douchebag ...
"Involuntary unemployment is barbaric. In the wealthiest country in history, almost 30 million people wish they had full-time work. But, as always, there arenÂ’t enough jobs. And because economic security requires decent work, itÂ’s unsurprising that 50 million people are poverty-stricken and 16 million children are hungry.

"This is a disgrace and an economic error: the US government can easily afford a Job guarantee (JG) program, becoming our employer of last resort."

You don't have to give up your private property to be entitled to a job, Loser.

Once again there are more forces involved than just mean ole businesses not wanting to hire you poor dumb ole black folks??

You have no clue as to what would be conducive to job creation or what success would look like should it actually happen!!

"A job guarantee (JG) is an economic policy proposal aimed at providing a sustainable solution to the dual problems of inflation and unemployment. Its aim is to create full employment and price stability. It is related to the concept of employer of last resort (ELR).[1]

"The economic policy stance currently dominant around the world uses unemployment as a policy tool to control inflation; when cost pressures rise, the standard monetary policy carried out by the monetary authority (central bank) tightens interest rates, creating a buffer stock of unemployed people, which reduces wage demands, and ultimately inflation.

"When inflationary expectations subside, these people will get their jobs back.

"In Marxian terms, the unemployed serve as a reserve army of labor.

"By contrast, in a job guarantee program, a buffer stock of employed people (employed in the job guarantee program) provides the same protection against inflation without the social costs of unemployment, hence (it is argued) fulfilling the dual mandate of full employment and price stability.[1]"

Involuntary unemployment in the richest country in history is entirely solvable. Those who've seen their share of US income triple over the past forty years, often by outsourcing middle class US jobs to Communist China, can be taxed at the same rates they were in the 1950s and the resulting revenues used implement a jobs program that's independent of capital flight.

If the purpose of government is not to make its citizens happy what is the purpose of government?

How would you propose making the citizens happy? keep in mind that in order for me to be happy you have to be broke and unemployed with no benefits.

How about 3% unemployment, or less?

So-called "job guarantees" will do nothing for inflation. If anything, it would aggravate inflation as government tried to finance all the parasites added to the federal payroll.

It wouldn't really solve the unemployment problem either because all the government would be doing is dispensing paychecks. It wouldn't be creating real jobs that would last more than a week after the government money stopped coming.
Properly administered, JG would pay for itself while providing the same sort of social insurance that UE covers today:

"A bottom-up JG could bolster small businesses and nonprofits, and co-ops could apply for JG grants to pay wages. Neighborhoods wouldnÂ’t have to bankroll Walmart or McDonaldÂ’s.

It may sound expensive, but a JG would pay for itself...Remember, current anti-poverty programs like unemployment insurance pay people not to work, destroying human capital, sales, output, and the tax base.

"Estimated spending for a national infrastructure JG is $750 billion; bottom-up models, cheaper. JG outlays would replace or reduce the costs of much current anti-poverty spending (roughly $746 billion), with exponential benefits.

"The Treasury should finance a JG, but national, state or local agencies could administer it."

You can post all the crap studies you want, there is absolutely no way that this program will pay for itself. The simplest proof of that is that, despite the widespread belief that the government oes people a job, not a single country n this planet has a program designed for the government to hand you a job.

At one time the purpose of government was thought to be life, liberty and property, but Jefferson dropped the property bit and replaced it with the pursuit of happiness. Was Jefferson correct? John Adams another Declaration of Independence committee member agreed saying, "The happiness of people is the end of government."

You really have no idea what you are saying, do you?

The pursuit of happiness is not the same as happiness. The Founders deliberately used the former term to disabuse anyone of the idea that they were promising that government would make them happy.

Every government on the planet has a civilian jobs program.
A JG program would simply build on that in partnership with the private sector.

"The JG thus fulfils an absorption function to minimise the real costs associated with the flux of the private sector. When private sector employment declines, public sector employment will automatically react and increase its payrolls.

"So in a recession, the increase in public employment will increase net government spending, and stimulate aggregate demand and the economy.

"Conversely, in a boom, the decline of public sector employment and spending caused by workers leaving their JG jobs for higher paid private sector employment will lessen stimulation, so the JG functions as an automatic stabilizer controlling inflation.

"The nation always remains fully employed, with a changing mix between private and public sector employment.

"Since the JG wage is open to everyone, it will functionally become the national minimum wage.

"Under the JG, people of working age who are not in full-time education and have less than 35 hours per week of paid employment would be entitled to the balance of 35 hours paid employment, undertaking work of public benefit at the minimum wage.

"The aim is to replace unemployment and underemployment with paid employment (up to the hours desired by workers), so that those who are at any point in time surplus to the requirements of the private sector (and mainstream public sector) can earn a reasonable living rather than suffer the indignity and insecurity of underemployment, poverty, and social exclusion."

The Pentagon could run a 21st century CCC program, providing millions of unemployed young people with skills and work experiences that wouldn't require PTSD treatment afterwards.

The options are limited only by imagination in the richest country in history.

Yep lets leave it up to a few marxist, central planning, statist, bureaucrats and a horde of agencies , boards, committees, panels, directorates, collectives, guilds and social engineering "experts" to lead us to that great communal promised land....for the people!!!

Mindless scumbags

People keep having ideas for change and improvement of life. It is mankind's history. From stone axes to computers and from rule by kings to people. Why do people continually change, their ideas, their technology, their ideas what is the cause? Think of the changes in the last 200 years, slavery, marriage, working conditions, unemployment insurance, social security; it seems entirely possible that in another hundred years, or even twenty years Americans will expect to have a job, no matter. One thing is certain, we will continue to change and it will continue to be risky and will continue to scare some, it always has.

When the US investor class found it more profitable to invest in productive as opposed to extractive enterprises, taxes may have limited their ability to do so. Today, investors get better returns gambling with their money on Wall Street or funding sweatshops in third world countries. Neither course helps lower US unemployment rates.

This gets right to the heart of what I'd oppose about such a program. Government 'partnering' with business is no less dangerous that government partnering with religion.

What about federally owned corporations?

"The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is a federally owned corporation in the United States created by congressional charter in May 1933 to provide navigation, flood control, electricity generation, fertilizer manufacturing, and economic development in the Tennessee Valley, a region particularly affected by the Great Depression.

"The enterprise was a result of the efforts of Senator George W. Norris of Nebraska.

"TVA was envisioned not only as a provider, but also as a regional economic development agency that would use federal experts and electricity to rapidly modernize the region's economy and society."

A dangerous precedent. Economic power should be privately held, and not intertwined with coercive government.

"During the 1920s and the Great Depression years, Americans began to support the idea of public ownership of utilities, particularly hydroelectric power facilities. The concept of government-owned generation facilities selling to publicly owned distribution utilities was controversial and remains so today.[2]

"Many believed privately owned power companies were charging too much for power, did not employ fair operating practices, and were subject to abuse by their owners (utility holding companies), at the expense of consumers.

"During his presidential campaign, Roosevelt claimed that private utilities had 'selfish purposes' and said, 'Never shall the federal government part with its sovereignty or with its control of its power resources while I'm president of the United States.'

"By forming utility holding companies, the private sector controlled 94 percent of generation by 1921, essentially unregulated. (This gave rise to the Public Utility Holding Company Act of 1935 (PUHCA)).

"Many private companies in the Tennessee Valley were bought by the federal government. Others shut down, unable to compete with the TVA. Government regulations were also passed to prevent competition with TVA."

There are some who believe public resources belong to the public, you know?

Gotta love magic money, without it Greece would be the biggest joke on the planet when it comes to guaranteed employment.

The Pentagon could run a 21st century CCC program, providing millions of unemployed young people with skills and work experiences that wouldn't require PTSD treatment afterwards.

The options are limited only by imagination in the richest country in history.

And the laws of economics are totally irrelevant.

Except when you have to pay the bills.
