The Federal Reserve Act when chartered in 1913, the private mostly European owners said there will be no more recessions and depressions. We quickly went to war, then they flooded the nation with currency which became known as the Roaring 20's and tightened to much with a nervous stock market in 1929 and no safeguards. Somehow, we had a Great Depression for over a decade to get us ready and willing to go to war. Many people died from the depression alone.

Of course all this depends on what you mean economy, as there are several ways of measuring the health of the economy. If we go by GDP per capita then Luxembourg, Macao, Ireland, Singapore, Qatar, UAE, Switzerland, and San Marino are all doing better than the US.
