The crime was the hack. The investigation is to find out if Trump colluded with Russia to hack. All the evidence that has been disclosed so far seems to indicate he did. Hence, the Uday e-mails about meeting with the Russian lawyer with Kushner, Manafort, and whoever else was in on that meeting to "get dirt" on Hillary. Also, Trump is on video urging the Russians to hack.
