October 25, 1944, four Japanese battleships, eight cruisers, and eleven destroyers surprised the US Navy off the Philippines in what became one of the largest naval battles in history. 7 US destroyers and 6 escort carriers on submarine duty faced certain destruction. The 7 small US destroyers charged the massive Japanese fleet to buy time for the escort carriers to escape in what became the US Navy’s finest hour.

Read The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors for an excellent account of this David vs Goliath battle.

The wreck of the Destroyer Escort USS Samual Roberts has been located in what is now the deepest wreck located.

As a side note, I have no clue why Hollywood has never made a movie about this epic battle, especially with CGI the past few decades.

The U.S. was on the verge of losing he first offensive in the Pacific war at Guadalcanal when Halsey relieved Gormley and took over the campaign. He understood the Japanese military mind and he correctly assumed that they would retreat and regroup rather than follow up on a victory. It gave the Marines breathing room and a chance for resupply.
