UNITED NATIONS The U-N says the world's 50 poorest countries will provide nearly all of a 40-percent increase in the planet's population by the year 2050.
In a report yesterday, the U-N Population Division predicted the world's population in 2050 will be more than nine (b) billion people. Less developed countries will see an explosion from five-point-three (b) billion to just under eight (b) billion people. By contrast, the population of richer developed countries will remain mostly unchanged, at one-point-two (b) billion.
The report reconfirms many trends, including an increasingly aging population in developed countries. But their populations won't decline because of immigration.
The U-S is projected to be the major net recipient of international migrants, with its population increasing from 298 (m) million now to 394 (m) million people in 2050.
