In a normal society, the requirement that gun ownership should require a mental health check would seem reasonable (although it grossly overstates the ability of the checkers to actually identify mental problems).
But, as others have pointed out, in today's polarized America, there are many areas -- those with the highest gun-violence rates, incidentally -- where holding conservative/pro-American views is a prima facie sign of mental illness.
And, in a nation with more guns than people, a determined madman will not have too much trouble getting a gun. Note that Mexico has extremely strict gun laws.
