Iran once had a thriving population and economy. It was on the forefront of technology, art, and culture. Then the muslims took control and the place turned into a cesspool.

Many citizens fled the tyranny and over the years the Muslims entrenched themselves into a terror network with secret police and public executions and beatings.

The historical leadership (similar to the UK) was abandoned for a Muslim theocracy.

Now that the people have had a taste of it they want nothing to do with it. They want their freedoms back. They are literally fighting for their own freedom.

People are allowed to determine their own government. Theocracies, which are just slightly veiled dictatorships, are demoralizing to the people. They want to join the world with THEIR culture instead of being exiled from both the world and their own culture. Iran has had passive Muslim elements in it but never as a majority and most certainly NOT extremist....now the extremist muslims are running the place with corporal punishments for not claiming belief.

The biggest possible problem is that the current cleric government murders its population to remain in power and continues to fund terrorism around the world. The second biggest potential problem is that the Kurds gain self control and form Kurdistan. (A bigger problem than the Palestinians ever dreamed of being)

WW2 settled the matter with finality.

The Shah was firmly in place and held none of the former alliances from the Ottoman's. They were backwater for a time as they found their footing. But in the 60's and 70's they came into the modern era a bit too fast for comfort. (Miniskirts and bikinis kinda were too much for them and Republicans for the most part)

They used oil money to develop nuclear weapons and other weapons to fight Iraq, the "Stans" and India with.

When they took the American Embassy staff hostage it was over for them. The USA military was a Joke as Vietnam and Korea was fought using leftovers from WW2. It wasn't until Reagan that the military was brought up to modernization. By that time it was too little too late to fix Iran as the Cold War was in its peak and the USSR was poised to fall.
