Why We Have the Death Pentalty.

This guy simply needs to be accountable.

He is free to make his choices.

He is not free to choose his consequences. They should be severe.

I have said several times that every time I get close to supporting abolishing the death penalty, some sick effer comes along and does something that would make me willing to execute them myself.
This scene from Hang'em High was always thought provoking. There are two teenage boys on the gallows. Eastwood's character pleaded for them but the judge was clear...this was the LAW. In this case, you balance the fact that they were stupid associated with a crime (but not really the perpetrators), but still just kids.

Clearly this is not retaliation. But consistency (at least in the judges mind) in the application of the law. If we had that, we'd be having executions every weekend. We might not stop anyone else, but the convicted would be held accountable (and we'd be minus a few killers/rapists).

Okay but that really doesn't work they way you seem to think in part because criminals either don't care or think they will get away with it. There really is a lot of dynamics to consider. At one point this very same little city in Virginia had as many people sitting on death row as the state of Texas (back in the late 80's/early 90's albeit briefly) because they were a bit too quick with handing down the death penalty (and also because people would spend more time waiting for execution in Virginia than in Texas.) I don't know where the middle ground is for me, but Old Testament an eye for an eye is not the approach we should take, but the Constitution clearly intended for there to be a death penalty in the fifth amendment. Maybe not being able to draw the line is a good thing. Go with the same logic of Potter Stewart who couldn't define porn, but knew it when he saw it.

That approach is misunderstood and is not a tit-for-tat approach. Mercy has always been the halmark of a chosen people (or that is what was intended).

What you might be talking about are exceptions, which i would agree with.

However, the exception is that you are granted something less.....not the way we do it today.

The death penatly for a white collar defendant is probably never going to happen. But still, they kill people.

I am not about lessening the exactness of the law on anyone. I don't care who you are.

And the cases I have cited deserve it, unless there is something they are not telling us (imo).

No.

I am not on board with this.

A clear definition under specific circumstances relieves the judge of having to decide and carry that burden.

If they qualify, there is nothing the judge can do and the convict faces the full force of the law.

I can see no way to justify this:

I don't care if this guy was sleeping with your wife or even your daughter. It's the chair.

If he wasn't sleeping with them, then it's a short drop and a sudden stop. Time for the crowd to cheer.

That or burned at the stake: Don't really care if he has "mental issues".

A city councillor is in hospital after being doused in five gallons of petrol and set alight.

Lee Vogler, a councilman in Danville City, Virginia, suffered serious burns after he was attacked by a man at around 11.30am on Wednesday.

The man forced his way into the offices of Showcase Magazine, where he worked, and drenched Mr Vogler in gasoline.

While trying to run away, Mr Vogler was set on fire by the attacker, according to horrified onlookers and law enforcement.

Death chambers are barbaric.
They were barbaric at Auschwitz, and they're barbaric today.

The state walking human beings into a death chamber alive, then wheeling them out dead...
NO Thank you!

Lord forbid we have judges who get to judge.

A false equivalency about as big as the Titanic.

If you don't have the stomach for it, I get it.

But many believe the presence of strict and evenly applied laws is a sign of civiliazation.

If you are good with letting a man who shot his girlfriend in the head and ran over her to kill a fetus....live out his days. We'll simply have to disagree. Human life is worth protecting and if that means punishing those who don't value it by taking theirs away (holding the accountable)....I am all for it.

The adjudicate the law.

Deciding if a person's crimes warrants the death penalty was never intended and you'd be a first class jerk to throw that on a judge.

You're misrepresenting what he said.

There is no exact science regarding when something meets the definition of pornography. Depictions of sex and nudity aren't automatically "pornography", such as if they're deemed to serve an artistic or educational purpose.

However, that doesn't mean that there aren't certain objective attributes about a thing which can't be used to view something as pornographic. Things which are deemed pornographic will objectively contain depictions of sex and nudity, so the idea that someone could just as easily and reasonably deem a pineapple to be pornographic as a XXX movie simply isn't true.

Just as how there is no exact science regarding when something meets the definition of racist, but we can all pretty much reasonably agree that a Neo-Nazi brandishing a Swastika in public is racist.

What about a Black single mother who beats her baby to death?

Then I am first class jerk. Regardless, with less than a 30% chance of survival when you have 60% burns, it is looking like this will more likely than not be a life in prison or something less incident.

Here is why....

“She apparently saw everything that had happened to Edward, the bloodstain bed expert, Jan Johnson. She testified that Anna had to be in a kneeling position over the edge of the tub. Where obviously her brother was lying dead in the tub with blood everywhere. And then he hacked her to death with a machete,” Elmore said.

Zakrzewski laid Anna’s and Sylvia’s bodies in the tub, then left the home.

He emptied their bank account, drove to Orlando, and hopped on a flight to Hawaii. Zakrzewski lived in Maui until he ran out of money.

Even
On purpose?
Convicted of doing so.
Sentenced to death.
In prison she was, waiting her turn in the chamber of death.
Those fighting for her life got her a new trial...at which she was found to be innocent.
Luckily the popular "execute without delay - make them pay" brigade weren't running anything then.

The guy is likely a republican with having a wife and kids. Depends on the severity of the burns, But it does take at least a day for the swelling to start on with inhaling hot air or flames. Like that actress lady that crashed into a garage. She took a day before she died,
Your link says a week. Reading is fundamental.

You will never get the death penalty if he survived the attack. If you want the death penalty for certain crimes, talk to your state legislators.

Here we go...this is what the death penalty is;
The taking of human life, by the 'govt man', also known as the state.
Death penalty needs to be abolished...yesterday!

Court Schedules Oct. 16 Execution for Robert Roberson

(Anderson County, Texas, July 16, 2025) Despite the overwhelming evidence proving that Robert Roberson is innocent, today District Court Judge Austin Reeve Jackson granted the State’s request to schedule his execution for October 16, 2025. Attorney General Ken Paxton recently asked the court to schedule Mr. Roberson’s execution even though the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals (CCA) is currently considering new evidence further proving his innocence.

To date, no court has substantively reviewed the mountain of evidence proving that the tragic 2002 death of Mr. Roberson’s chronically ill toddler daughter, Nikki, resulted from illness, medical error, and accident, none of which was Mr. Roberson’s fault.
