Jefferson didn't write the Constitution. As a matter of fact, he wasn't even in on the Constitutional Convention. He was the Minister to France at the time.

It seemed obvious that the poster simply erred and meant the Declaration. We know that Jefferson was in France during the Constitution convention. But of the five picked to serve on the committee to write the Declaration Jefferson was the obvious choice with Adams second choice. Livingston was picked for his family connections?
In any case after Jefferson wrote it the committee then edited Jeffersons masterpiece and after that the whole congress had at it. In the end 86 changes had been made to Jefferson's document, 480 words eliminated leaving 1,337.

If the colonies had simply wanted to break with Britain they had done so on July 2nd with their vote for independence. But that wasn't all that was needed. America needed allies, first only 1/3 of the colonists supported the break, another 1/3 could care less, and the final 1/3 supported Britain, but the biggies were France and maybe Spain. The Declaration was propaganda in that it was an appeal for colonists and France to help us. Why else would Jefferson go to such lenghts to explain to the world the why of our break? Great writing based on great principles but written to garner support. Propaganda at its finest. Did it work?
