You're correct that science doesn't work on consensus. But when we are talking about the opinions of idiots on forums who think world wide science is corrupt vs what actual educated scientists world wide think, then I think it does have some valid use in an argument.
The whole, science doesn't work on consensus thing is more valid towards people that present evidence, and the evidence holds up from examination of it from people educated in that field.
