Why Space Travel ?

I have always been an opponent of sending rockets into space, especially when tax $$ are being used. I still just don't see the point,or benefit to mankind.

Can anyne cite anything worthwhile that came from the trip to the moon, that coudn't have been obtained anyway, without that space travel ? Or from any of the space endeavours since then ?

I can think of 2 results from these >> 17 dead astronauts, and Billions of $$$ wasted.

The list of civilian benefits from Military R&D would be endless
But directly using the same money to fund R&D in healthcare, communications, energy, transportation would help mankind more

But directly using the same money to fund R&D in healthcare, communications, energy, transportation would help mankind more.

R&D in healthcare and those other areas is the same whether the intent was to benefit the military or some other portion of mankind. Don't forget that soldiers and sailors are as much a part of mankind as civilians.

Maybe, but you would not get the same results. Here is what I do know- people who are opposed to space travel/exploration are the scared and timid people among us. They are not the people who lead revolutions or ever contribute to society in any meaningful way. That is just who they are.

It means that R&D money spent directly on healthcare is more efficient than peripheral benefits from NASA R&D

Mars doesn't have enough mass to retain an atmosphere so terraforming it would be a waste. But, building a base on Phobos or Deimos to support asteroid belt mining, that would be a good thing.

For some reason they want to put those bubbles on mars. The ones humans can live in. Domes? Whatever they call them.

Nope. Living in a bubble for your entire life wouldn't be very fun. Far better would be to hollow out a mountain, and live there. Far more resistant to micro meteorite damage, and because the Martian atmosphere is so thin, the 200 mile per hour wind storms wouldn't be a problem either. But life in a bubble? Yeah... no. The constant stress of worrying about dying from the bubble being pierced, or getting blown away in a storm would be too oppressive for anyone for any length of time.

elons Martian idea is both a waste, and a death sentence.

With a multi engine rating and a couple of thousand hours of PIC time, you would be guessing wrong.

Too funny. I wouldn't think a pilot who spends 30 years in a airplane would write what you wrote. LOL. You spent your entire life in a dangerous bubble. Up where the atmosphere is thin. Flying in 200 mph winds. With the constant stress a bird might fly into your engine or whatever.

I forgot about that reason. Even if all we had was a simple space station near to earth where humans could survive an asteroid or nuclear war. How long would we need to give the planet before it was safe to go back?

Or let’s say we colonized mars. We’d have back up people. These wouldn’t be rich people. They might be prisoners. Like australians

Depending on the size of the asteroid it could be decades before the planet was habitable again. Most likely it would only be a few years, but a few years of nuclear winter type weather and most life is toast. Far better to prevent the hit in the first place.

I have always been an opponent of sending rockets into space, especially when tax $$ are being used. I still just don't see the point,or benefit to mankind.

Can anyne cite anything worthwhile that came from the trip to the moon, that coudn't have been obtained anyway, without that space travel ? Or from any of the space endeavours since then ?

I can think of 2 results from these >> 17 dead astronauts, and Billions of $$$ wasted.

Mars doesn't have enough mass to retain an atmosphere so terraforming it would be a waste. But, building a base on Phobos or Deimos to support asteroid belt mining, that would be a good thing.

The Martian moons have micro gravity and I would think that may be problematic long term. I'd say better would be a base on Ceres.

Colonization is the ONLY way to ensure mankinds survival. The only thing that has the ability to end life on Earth is an asteroid strike. That has nearly happened at least once that we know of, and probably several times who's evidence is long eroded away. Mankind is the first creature that we know of that has the ability to prevent another hit. The technology generated to allow man to live and thrive in Space is far different than that which is used for robotics.

If you want revolutionary change, as opposed to evolutionary change, you have to make it possible for man to live and thrive in space.

If we could come up with some type of full time propulsion to drive spacecraft, we could explore our own system fairly quickly. Like 5 or 6 days to Mars and back. The way we have to do it now using gravity/coasting takes far far too long and makes it more dangerous because of travel times and consumables needed.
