Trump is about to blow the lid off the Washington power structure that's slowly and systematically destroying our country.
The Root For America Blog | The ROOT RANT:
This blog correctly points out how money is destroying our political system, but the article devolves into partisan drivel, placing the blame on Obama/Clinton - and largely omitting the major role Republicans have played in creating the Lobbying Industrial Complex, which reached its apex under Tom DeLay and K Street, and continues to give centralized financial power (Koch brothers) almost total power to select candidates. This is to say nothing of Citizens United, which was opposed by Obama because it allows big money to flow into the pockets of our politicians under cover of darkness. And let's not talk about Reagan whose goal was to put business in government. This is why corporate lobbying became steroidal under Reagan.
Every Republican promises to return Washington to the people - but nobody should buy into this very old and tired lie. In fact, whenever a Democrat tries to curb the power of business over government or legislation, he is called a socialist.
The OP can't have it both ways. Either Obama/Clinton are socialists who aim to destroy business or they are crony capitalists who aim to increase the power of business over the political machinery.
For my part, it's very clear that Bill Clinton was part of the problem. With NAFTA, he broke ties with Labor and got in bed with Wall Street. He did this in order to tap into the deeper pockets of Republican funding sources. Obama is also a problem because despite pushing much harder than the Right for regulations over business and over campaign financing, he still accepted a ton of money.
Yes, Republicans are the party of business, and they work more directly for the corporations who fund them - but the system is broken and the Left has to keep trying to overturn Citizens United, and shine a light on all the dark money that Republicans don't want to expose.
Trump was right about a few things. George W Bush was an incompetent president who mismanaged the Iraq War, and Jeb Bush is a low energy moron.
I would love to believe that Trump will stay immune to big money, but I have less faith in presidential candidates.
(Why do Republican voters always fall so deeply for their political leaders? Why don't they question what they are being sold?)
