Putin, personally, is a gray man, ex-KGB type. The "lust for glory" isn't his weakness.
Expanding territory means taking responsibility. In time the USA couldn't afford to join another state mostly populated by Vietnamese (20 million of them), and become the USA&A, and Russian Federation can afford joining twenty million Russians (even if somebody call them Ukrainians) and give them equal rights.
