Why is American food so bad?

Good points, but I had pizza in Spain and Italy.
I had a pizza in Brindisi which was authentic original Marguerite and it was great because it was Italy and authentic......... but frankly it was sorta meh compared to the toppings you get elsewhere.

America has appropriated many foreign food styles.

I have never heard anyone say…..Let’s go out for British food!
For once I am wholly in agreement with you. Just for kicks a month ago I made Bangers and Mash after rereading some Douglas Reeman. Ghah, I made it with what were claimed to be authentic bangers, and it was the most bland, tasteless dish I ever cooked.

I often chuckle at the myths yanks have about British food. Probably because they've never been abroad. The number of Americans on the likes of YouTube etc.. that now live in the UK and Europe, couldn't believe how dreadful their American food was.

So I typed in, "Why is American food so dreadful" -

Go onto YouTube and check it out, American food is literally dreadful.
Yup, government mandates, instituted at the behest of corporate food producers.

Now that RFK Jr. Is rolling back some of that bullshit, things should get better.

That being said, if you grow your own veggies, as we do, and buy your meats from quality butchers, then your food will be every bit as good as what can be found in Europe.

Well, it's just cheap bread with a lot of stuff piled on top of it. That's been done for 4,000 years or so at least.

They make some pretty good pot roasts and veggies at some inns. Euros do cheeses better, too. That's about all I can think of in their favor, lol. A local Vietnamese joint here makes the best spring rolls I've ever had. The chef has a British accent, lol.

In edit, it's probably an Australian accent.

As for the American french fries, ours knock socks off theirs -

Nah, Belgium still has the best. There's this little place outside of Nijmegan, gosh are their pom frittes good.

There's also a place in Spa, just outside the race track. Yum!

Easy; an overabundance of meats of all sorts. No need to be creative by and large. In Europe I tasted many dishes made from food yanks would consider scraps. They aren't of course but using cuts of beef in "delicacies" when you can have rump or T-bone isn't really going to cut it with the average Yank when the cost is, well, high. Being of East European heritage I of course am very familiar with "Euro" tucker and I LOVE it!!! Same with Asian foods; I did Asian Studies in part at Uni and we had faculty "Banquets" put on by the Lecturers which were amazing. But again; making use of scarce recourses; PROTEIN!!

So I think at worst the yanks simply don't need to enhance flavour and volume; good tucker is all too readily available in abundance.

As for Pommy "fish'n'chips?? The cod was heavy and with only modest flavour compared to our reef fish like Coral Trout, Red Emperor etc etc. But as it was in Dover and the ambiance was "White Cliffs Pommy" it went down a treat.

And yeas; your brawn is amazing; not tasteless and chewy like our version.

Greg
Best fish and chips I ever had was in Westport, on the south island of NZ. Right on the waterfront.

Simply amazing!

We know that we must not confuse Correlation with Causation , BUT

These people are fat and unhealthy ,
Look as though they are from the Pork Pie Genus
And believe their Doctors know and tell the truth .

They swallow prescription drugs and worse, as though tomorrow might never come .
And they do not talk properly .

Surely a definite QED ----
- Quod Erat Demonstrandum for the Hilly Billy people
I live and work near a city where BBQ, pulled pork and bacon are the thing....and I am surrounded fat disgusting pre-diabetic slobs daily. I can't wait for their piggish gastronomic habits to put them under.

Been to the US many times, never came across anything special or fantastic. One time family there made cherry pie, but I don't like cherries so I didn't try it.
Americans are ******* sugar, salt and fat-addicted slobs and proud of it. 🤪

Drug addicts find themselves some "good shit" too.

I'm a butcher myself and have been for 35 years. Occasionally we made bangers in the shop and I took some home myself and arrived at the same conclusion you did when I ate them.

I like the food over here. Not fast food, never. But here in Atlantic City I had a pile of steamers and a slab of USDA prime beef last night and both were great. That was in the casino. I guess people who think US food sucks have never eaten in New Orleans or SF or NYC or any of the thousands of southern BBQ places. Or just go to any beach town and get some fresh seafood. The truth is, the US has as good or better food than every country, even at the dishes they invented.
I agree only on the seafood part.

Well it's a pretty safe bet that the brightest and best don't use You Tube to evaluate American food.

But I can get a good meal in most places in the USA for a lot cheaper than similar cuisine in say Vancouver.

Does America have some really bad food? Absolutely. But so does every other country. But if you haven't been able to find some really good traditional American food, you just haven't looked very much.
Ive been all over the U.S. and I disagree. Most everywhere you go it's mostly all about fat, salt and sugar. Stuff that's very unhealthy and if a person craves it then THEY are unhealthy. I don't crave it. I'm actually a meat cutter myself, and I hate the "steak" people. They are the stupidest most ignorant and arrogant people with the least amount of culinary creativity. They ask me what I like. I tell them stir fried chicken or shrimp and rice with steamed veggies with a light sauce. They look so perplexed!.😆 I WISH I could be the 2 inch ribeye that gives them colon cancer someday and the potato and soda pop that gives them diabetes. That's what I secretly wish on all my fat swine customers as they walk away.

Yeah; pub food in the UK CAN be disappointing but some is very good. Shepherd's pie ONLY with Worcestershire sauce is excellent without gristle. lol

Greg
Most of what people call shepherd's pie is really cottage pie.

Well we can agree to disagree. I know there's a lot of junk out there and people buy it. But I also am able to get an excellent healthy meal right here in Albuquerque. And I haven't found any place in Mexico that serves food as tasty as our New Mexican cuisine that is patterned after traditional Mexican cuisine but is less bland, has more flavor. Our Mexican immigrant family and friends concur with that.

You just proved my point by saying that it's fashioned after Mexican food and is not traditional American food! I wouldn't be surprised if it has some native American influence too. I wonder how similar it is to Peruvian food. I've had a lot of that over the years as my wife is from there. I'm surprised people aren't sharing more photos of food in this thread. Can you share a few pics of the food you described, or maybe some links to menus of local restaurants?
