Why is American food so bad?

I like the food over here. Not fast food, never. But here in Atlantic City I had a pile of steamers and a slab of USDA prime beef last night and both were great. That was in the casino. I guess people who think US food sucks have never eaten in New Orleans or SF or NYC or any of the thousands of southern BBQ places. Or just go to any beach town and get some fresh seafood. The truth is, the US has as good or better food than every country, even at the dishes they invented.

It was GREAT at that Chinese place around the corner in Piccadilly Circus.

Greg
If you go to non-English restaurants, you’ll do great. Their Indidan places are terrific.

My mistake was wanting to get the full British “feel” by going to a pub and having Shepard’s Pie. It was so gristly and tasteless I wouldn’t have given it to a dog.

Best meal of my life was in Montmarte!

No, just, no.

Yes, one of the myths you're brought up on. Probably had beans on toast 5 or 6 times in my life, so about once a decade. Even then, most prefer beans not to be on toast because if makes the beans soggy. Baked beans are bland in the US because they don't realise you have to put a blob of butter in when heating them.

Been to the US many times, never came across anything special or fantastic. One time family there made cherry pie, but I don't like cherries so I didn't try it.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, fried chicken, barbecued ribs, macaroni and cheese, clam chowder, chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes, white gravy, and turnip greens, buffalo wings. corn bread, apple pie, Philly cheesesteak, Thanksgiving turkey with stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie, biscuits and gravy, sloppy joes, breakfast sausage, blackeyed peas, banana pudding, sweet potato pie, Texmex, chili, anything with tomatoes (which originated in America), anything with pasta or noodles (also originated in America), pulled pork sandwiches, beef brisket, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo, hash brown potatoes, ranch dressing, chicken and dumplings, chicken and waffles, corn dogs, meatloaf, tuna casserole, pecan pie, chocolate chip cookies, cream cheese, donuts, tater tots, beef jerky, potato chips, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, popcorn, s'mores, BLT sandwiches, sweet tea, soda, Jello, corned beef and cabbage, sub sandwiches, graham crackers, pot roast, onion rings, chicken pot pies, pancakes and syrup, grilled cheese sandwiches, brownies, Boston baked beans, root beer, corn on the cob, pickled peppers, and a hundred varieties of cheeses.

Hungry yet?

Not bland at my house, even a can of plain pork-n-beans gets a bit of chopped white onion and a bit of King syrup.

I suspect a can of beanie-wennies would be considered a delicacy in the UK.....You know, like SPAM.

Actually no!! There's about a third on there I don't like. Maccy cheese is really just sick. I've tried it a few times, even a maccy cheese pizza and it's just like trying to eat sick, just don't like the stuff. Some I've not heard of, and some combinations I wouldn't have together.

The thing is with the UK, it's thousands of years old. Most foods were home baked, and because of wars, many recipes stem from using left overs. The other thing is, an awful lot Asian and European foods and flavours are now absorbed into our menus. Probably why the myths of beans on toast and fish fingers, beans, and chips crop up so often.

I mainly cook Indian, then Thai. I need to get galangal root because I've just been using galangal paste.

For the most part, I have no complaints where American food is concerned. I will say this though, whoever thought that cheese and cake go well together, I have one word for them: Yuck!

God bless you always!!!

This is what AI says about maccy cheese -

AI says -

Macaroni and cheese can sometimes taste or smell like vomit due to the presence of butyric acid, a component of cheese that can also be found in vomit. This is particularly noticeable in some types of cheese sauces or artificial cheese. Additionally, lactose intolerance or other food sensitivities can cause digestive discomfort that may be perceived as a similar taste or smell.

So I was right, lol

I often chuckle at the myths yanks have about British food. Probably because they've never been abroad. The number of Americans on the likes of YouTube etc.. that now live in the UK and Europe, couldn't believe how dreadful their American food was.

So I typed in, "Why is American food so dreadful" -

Well it's a pretty safe bet that the brightest and best don't use You Tube to evaluate American food.

But I can get a good meal in most places in the USA for a lot cheaper than similar cuisine in say Vancouver.

Does America have some really bad food? Absolutely. But so does every other country. But if you haven't been able to find some really good traditional American food, you just haven't looked very much.

For some bizarre reason, Americans usually berate UK baked beans, yet it was an American that introduced them to the UK. The difference being, ours are predominantly cooked in a tomato sauce like how they were introduced because they didn't take off in America, the US version are predominantly full of sugar and smoked flavour.

Tomatoes originated in the Americas.

Yeah; pub food in the UK CAN be disappointing but some is very good. Shepherd's pie ONLY with Worcestershire sauce is excellent without gristle. lol

I prefer Eastern European, Middle Eastern, Asian, and Indian food to both American and British food. However there are some components of British in American food I like too. It's just that so much American food is so appallingly greasy, artificial and sugared up, and British food in general is kind of boring.

Turkish food and some of the most amazing stuff I have ever seen and tasted.

15th post
American food is the best in the world
Mostly because we are a melting pot of other cultures.
We have American Chinese Food, American Italian Food, American Mexican Food….all adapting other cuisines
Strictly American foods are BBQ, Fried Chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs and PIZZA
Good points, but I had pizza in Spain and Italy.

I never take food critiques by Euros seriously; they eat snails and blood sausage and kidney pies, after all, and the worst fish on the planet are treated like delicacies there. Yuck. Don't even get me started on Asian food. And anybody who has ever seen that Indiana Jones movie with that scene from an Indian feast knows not to ever visit India and expect good food.

oh yeah, they think eels are edible, too.

I'll stick to the ribeyes and stuffed baked potatoes, please.
