Question from me and my fiancee. As I looked it up and it said that the president must wait due to chaos and lawlessness, but don't we already have that now in our country?

We still live in a "Hate Trump" America! The rioting in the streets will begin probably tonight or the weekend!

The Constitution and laws determine it. The President's term is set by the Constitution and the date is set by law.

He won't actually be waiting.
He will conduct meetings with foreign officials beginning this week. He will be organizing his cabinet and laying out policy plans full-time just like he did last time and he will hit the ground running. If he has both house and Senate he can go ahead and speed fill his cabinet without a massive fight. Or he could always do what Obama did if he couldn't get them appointed he... would appoint them Tsars. It sure would be nice if his cabinet was filled within two or three weeks of his taking the chair.

To tell you the truth he's already been meeting with foreign dignitaries..... I guess it violates some federal law I forgot the name of it.

Joe pops his head out frequently enough so that he's not missing an action. But man oh man I would love to be a fly on the wall when he calls Obama the next time. If Obama has caller ID there ain't no way he's going to pick up that phone.

It's for several reasons:
  • It provides a transition period between the outgoing administration and the incoming administration.
  • It provides enough time for the electoral process: counting votes, selection of electors, meeting of electors, certification by the Electoral College, certification by Congress, and inauguration day.
  • It is codified in the Constitution, although it was originally established on March 4 and was later updated by the 20th Amendment to January 20th.

He has to wait because it is a HUGE transfer of power, it takes time for the former administration to wrap things up and settle all affairs of theirs and for the new president to pick his cabinet, fill key positions, get staffed, contact many people and foreign leaders and to get set up there in DC both physically and governmentally.

Yes, it is 4 years, Noon on January 20th to noon on January 20th 4 years later. Did you know that up to 1937, it was held on March 4th? They changed it because that was way too long to get things going. Inaugurations when January 20th falls on a Sunday, are held in private on the 20th and publicly on the 21st of January.

There is a huge turnover of personnel and information takes place. It does take some time.

There has to be a date. The framers likely picked a date far enough forward of the election so the President elect could get their private affairs in order, move to Washington and doa turnover with the outgoing admin. There weren’t planes and hi speed internet when this date was set.

How is it not 4 years. Biden took office on Jan 20 2021. He will relinquish that office on Jan 20 2025. I’m not a mathematician but that sure seems like 4 years to me

A president gets elected in November and can only take office in January and must exit in January.

March is a long time.
 
Officially he can’t be sworn in until 1/20. But rest assured he’s already started. He’s been on the phone with Putin and Zalenski and told them to figure their shit out before 1/21 or he’s going to figure it out for them.
