You can volunteer for an experience with the risk of being subjected to involuntary consequences by the contributors. I am fairly certain that in a court of law, your voluntary participation weighs heavily against a claim of full victimization.

Perhaps off-center to this particular subject were the experiments at Edgewood Arsenal within the MK Ultra program. I know of this first-hand. Soldiers were required to "volunteer" with the promise of extra leave and extra pay but were not told they would be subjected to the illegal administration of LSD. In fact, they were never told, neither during the application nor the subsequent days, weeks, months, years, and life-time of agony they suffered. When the whistle was finally blown they received no compensation or assistance from the Veterans Administration (medical/hospital) because they had "volunteered".

1). Enlistment is voluntary, carrying a 3-year term of service.
2). The draft (synonymous with conscription/compulsory) carries only a 2-year term of service and is determined by way of (for example) a lottery system.
3). You can offer yourself to be drafted (there's that word again) ... to be conscripted (as ambiguous as that may sound) to be taken into service "immediately" and be required only a 2-years term of service
