I think it may be the opposite. People with little or no self esteem want to create an identity for themselves by associating with others who claim to be individualistic non-conformists. This provides them with an excuse for evading personal responsibility for their own choices.

Genital jewelry or rings supposedly arouse/increase sexual feelings/intensity for women/men - I guess that some women/men might get this via their noses.
That's why they say: don't poke your nose into other peoples "things" - right?
