Why do people in America's "Inner City" tend to be more materialistic?

I've notice that these people are more interested in nice cars and mansions rather than aspiring to build a better future.

They don't care about science and technology.

They don't care about stopping "Global Warming".

And they would rather watch reality TV than smart sci fi.

Does extreme poverty causes people to be more materialistic than they should?

Why are suburban Americans less materialistic and more interested in stuff like space programs?
