Why did the U.S sell the Panama Canal?

HONG KONG (AP) — Panama sees a “big opportunity” in China’s massive “Belt and Road” infrastructure initiative, President Juan Carlos Varela said Tuesday during a visit to Hong Kong amid ambitious plans and proposals for Chinese-built bridges and rail lines.

Varela said the initiative, which aims to weave a network of ports, bridges and power plants linking China with Africa, Europe and beyond, is a chance to exploit Panama’s potential as a link between Asia and the Americas.

“The Belt and Road is all about connectivity and Panama is one of the most connected countries in the region. We have a very important airport, the Panama Canal and also the ports,” Varela told reporters.

“So Panama is going to be part of that initiative because we see a big opportunity to connect Asia and America to Panama.”

So far----this has only had to do with local infrastructure. The canals have still been constructed and secured by western interests. China has been courting Panama for a long time.

Seems like a really poor decision doesn't it? Surely you have the Agreement which outlines conditions which would allow America to regain ownership if they are profiting commerically or otherwise. This is so important to America that I can see a U.S president looking to reclaim this canal due to violations of the Agreement.

Exactly.....

Using the canal to denigrate US trade would be one of those violations.

From what I understand watching videos on this issue is that it can also prevent the U.S Navy from operating in tandem. You would rely on the West coast and be blocked from East Coast access. I don't know all the details, but China is surely operating in a manner that understands all the elements of this risk. What is worrisome is America NOT responding.

Trump calling this out is a key start.

The reasons Trump is getting so much resistance here.

1.) Chinese money in American media
2.) Chinese money flowing into DC

This is not brain surgery.

Panama will give back the Canal or the US will build a bigger one elsewhere.

In a full blown war I think any large navy ship going through the canal is probably a sitting duck anyway. Maybe it's time for a Texas canal?

What does the agreement say about reclaiming the canal?

And China is now watching their every move.
As the US is watching theirs----and has for decades. Its a touchy situation, but I think the US still holds the stronger position. The west knows how important that canal is. As for watching the military, lol, take a Panama cruise and you'll see at least one American warship in your traverse. It is no secret.

Yes

It required a turnover after so many years.

America ensuring that the Panama Canal is not being used by China of all nations, is a wise pursuit.

It's not going to happen. Get Trumps dick out of your mouth.

The canal belongs to Panama. Trump owes them money. This isn't about why or who owns the canal. It's about Trump creating a distraction, like he always does, to take the heat off his sorry ass, when he's cheating somebody out of money.

Panama should sue him, and seize any assets he has in the country.

I assume you mean the Panamanian taxes the Trump organization has been evading... both Trump Panama Hotel Management LLC and Trump International Hotels Management LLC?

Yeah, he definitely wants to muddy the waters and make these charges less visible.

liberal guilt? we paid for and died making it, probably because we took the land for our one benefit to greatly cut down on shipping times

Carter signed some convoluted treaty apparently designed to make the U.S. look benevolent. Like most of his decisions it made the U.S. look like a weak patsy. It looks like he died today.
