LAS VEGAS — With the Western United States continuing to face a shortage of affordable homes, state leaders are looking for ways to leverage one of the region’s largest assets: public lands.

In Las Vegas, a bipartisan coalition of governors from across the West met this week to discuss policy ideas they say could aid their efforts to increase the supply of housing.

“The West is unique in that the federal government has a large footprint in our area, whether it’s the Bureau of Land Management or the U.S. Forest Service,” Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said during a press conference Monday, “and so a lot of the work that we need to do for community planning, for growth, for housing, it really relies on strong federal partnerships.”

In Nevada, where 80% of land is owned by the federal government, officials are utilizing a two-decades-old federal law to acquire parcels from the Bureau of Land Management for development at a fraction of the land’s market value.

“While access to land is only a piece of the housing puzzle, in places like Clark County, where we are today, available land for development is slated to run out by 2032,” said Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo.

Might not be a popular opinion, but I oppose the sale of public lands to developers.

1) For them to make a big profit at the expense of taxpayers.

2) they aren't making more public land, when it's gone then it's gone.

There are plenty of vacant properties in these shithole cities for "affordable" housing. Stop trying to cater to these god damn developers that want to turn the countryside into another shithole city.

The bottom line is most western states agreed not to stake any claim for federally owned land as a condition of statehood, so the fact they are all riled up about this now is bullshit and a false premise from the get go.

This is the very definition of a grift, where people get you riled up about “the Feds” when in reality they are trying to steal land that you currently own (federal lands) and can use to hunt, fish, shoot, camp, etc.

They aren’t doing this because it’s going to benefit you, they are doing it because it will make politically connected people a shitload of money.

Remember when Harry Reid got caught up in such a land scheme around Las Vegas?

I would be open to some sort of plan but like you it wouldn't be selling to developers.

At a fraction of the land's market value? Says who?

Such a development would be EXTREMELY speculative - "affordable" housing remote from large cities? Hell, I wouldn't invest a dime in such a boondoggle. Anyone taking that risk and fronting their own money deserves to make a profit.

So the OP apparently wants the problem to be solved, but doesn't want anyone making money in the process.

Fucking socialists. Never had a real job or run a company. Know nothing.

Build up, not out, that is what is "affordable" and uses the smallest footprint.

The feds owning far too much of the land in the eleven western states is a real problem.

But turning it over to developers to turn it into huge housing projects is a horrible idea.

Bugger-off asshole.....I could give two shits if it's solved or not.

The bottom line is they want to take "my" land to for their little boondoggles.

Are you stupid?

Moscow.....That's what can be looked forward to in a generation if we don't get shed of the millions of illegals FJB let in.

This would be much worse.

Single family housing is fine with me...Everyone needs a place to live.

The western lands do need to be sold off to private owners....Just not mega developers who will build the next generation of crappy "affordable housing" tract houses.

WTF?

And just who do you think the "private owners" will sell the land to?

Those lands were reserved for a reason and "affordable housing" was not one of them.

Don't you know a scam when you see one?

The original scam is the feds owning so much of the west.

There's a reason that the RE prices in places like Aspen, Vail, and Park City are so ghastly.
