Why did the U.S sell the Panama Canal?

We were not in charge of it.
Not currently, but that can change. Do you have any idea how fucking easy we could end ALL tariff wars if we took it back? China wants to put tariffs on our products? Fine, then they can sail all the way around South America to ship their goods. I assure you, they would drop all tariffs at that point.

It has everything to do with China exerting more influence in Panama and funding large infrastructure investments.

China’s influence in the Panama Canal has only grown since 2017 when then-president Carlos Varela severed diplomatic ties with Taiwan and recognized China, further opening the door to China’s expanded footprint in critical Canal infrastructure and laying the groundwork for alignment with the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

While much of the Canal’s original legislation expired upon turnover of the Canal to Panama, one key treaty relevant to U.S. and Chinese influence in the Canal remains active with no expiration date. The Treaty Concerning the Permanent Neutrality and Operation of the Panama Canal, or the Neutrality Treaty, between Panama and the United States guarantees permanent neutrality of the Canal with fair access for all nations and nondiscriminatory tolls. Only Panama may operate the Canal or maintain military installations in Panamanian territory.

The United States, however, reserved the right to exert military force in defense of the Panama Canal against any threat to its neutrality. Any interpreted Chinese threat to the Canal’s neutrality could activate the U.S. forces through this treaty, meaning current and future Chinese interventions should be calculated with this potential response in mind.

That canal was built by us. We spent enormous sums of money building it. We lost 30,000 lives during its construction. We have spent BILLIONS on doing maintenance on it since we gave it up. We have provided a security force to ensure that it remains safe and open for decades.

Now Panama crushes us with severely high prices. Doesnt seem fair in the least to me. I say we take it back and kill anyone who tries to stop us. :dunno:
You have many errors in that crap of a post. Did donnie the dooshbag tell you all that?

Seems like a really poor decision doesn't it? Surely you have the Agreement which outlines conditions which would allow America to regain ownership if they are profiting commerically or otherwise. This is so important to America that I can see a U.S president looking to reclaim this canal due to violations of the Agreement.
The U.S. never sold the Panama Canal. We paid hundreds of millions to the Panamanians to take it off our hands. That's why we should never accept it back unless Panama first pays us back all the money we gave them to take it in the first place.

What the fuck is this dumb shit? Youre saying that its such a curse to own the Panama canal that we paid them to take this burden off our hands? Tha fuck? :cuckoo:

Start with the 30,000 number.
From Google AI....

Yes, approximately 30,000 people died building the Panama Canal, making it the deadliest construction project in history: [1]
Causes of death
Most deaths were due to tropical diseases like malaria and yellow fever. Other causes included drowning, electrocution, and dynamite explosions. [1]
Injuries
Workers suffered gruesome injuries, including partial deafness from drinking quinine to prevent malaria. Some injuries required amputation. [2]
Accidents
Railroad accidents were common, especially for workers who were partially deaf. [2]

The French effort to build the canal was also deadly, with an estimated 20,000 workers dying. The French company liquidated in 1889 due to financial problems and dangerous work. [3]
American effort
The United States recorded 5,855 deaths among canal workers between 1904 and 1913, when construction ended. [2]
Human suffering

No no no, dont go trying to move the goal posts now. You said that MY post was wrong. You said it was full of errors. Prove me wrong or look like a complete fool.

I take it this means that you will NOT be able to show me where i was wrong?
You posted this "We lost 30,000 lives during its construction"

Who is "WE?" French people are not "we"

Yes "we". They were part of our team that undertook a historic construction project.

We gave a $10 million payment to Panama, and an annual annuity of $250,000 in order to build that canal, but I'm not sure if we paid them anything when we gave it back.
