The US hasn't been in a war since WWII. They have all been police actions. We managed a draw in Korea, all others, of significance, were defeats.

It's a sad, disgusting reality of war. You can argue the merits or not of Afghanistan, but American military leaders and politicians had to be aware that America wasn't going to be able to change the M.E through force. China and Russia would be funding their enemy no matter what.
What I don't understand is how much time and force was used when the U.S surely could have just bribed a few key leaders and topple others through covert means and influence. Why spend 20 years in a shytehole country while China wisely corners locations in the South China Sea that by some estimates are holding TRILLIONS of dollars in resources?
Economic innovation, expansion and domestic civil liberties are what ensure global influence. As Stain said:
"Ideas are more powerful than guns"
Leaving out the rest of his quote as it's speaking about suppression of ideology. The point is, if the West could form and mold ideas in Afghanistan, they would be successful. The use of guns was a certain failure.
Offer leaders a carrot, you aren't going to convert them to be Americans any more than we converted the CCP.
