I’m not saying the student is right but it appears that opinion is precisely what they were looking for.

The academic study itself established no facts or data about gender norms or reasons for conformity to them, and students were only asked to respond to the study, specifically, whether conformity was associated with popularity OR bullying.

I don’t know what the student wrote in her essay beyond the religious aspect but if the professor was asking for what amounted to opinion, I’m not sure it was fair to give a failing grade for an opinion.
