Why can't we decriminalize drugs?

I think that legalizing drugs is not a good idea because we actually have an entire list of drugs that are illegal to use without some kind of doctor's permission. This prevents people from abusing these substances so we can't let people choose how much they can take without them harming themselves. However, their are some drugs, such as cocaine, that are not only illegal but come with very high penalties for using them. These drugs are different in the sense that the penalties are much higher. This has kind of created an underground crime movement involving the use and transportation of drugs because every law enforcement officer will tell you that if you can get rid of drugs you can eliminate most crime in this country.

We can't legalize those drugs but why not just change the offense to a misdemeanor that way the abuse of these drugs is out in the open. The legal and illegal activity won't get pushed underground and it will make it easier for cops to find the pushers of these substances.

The other reason is that I just think it is inhumane to punish people so harshly for a habit that only affects them. People who are on these substances may know they need to get help and they may be afraid to if they think they can be put in jail for a long time.

Because Benjamin Netanyahu doesn't want that, so neither does either party...

Republicans and Dems dont want or dont have the appetite to fight for this kind of change.

1. They'd have to IGNORE lobbyist from the Prison Industry
2. The Prison Industry has transformed into a Corporation where the bottom line isnt rehabilitation, its profit.
3. How is this profit made? By taking away the freedom of Americans. That SHOULD be a problem for people but they've lulled many to sleep by just claiming that they are locking away the worse of the worse
4. Businesses are using Prisoner labor to increase their profits even more. DO you think they wont fight reducing the number of slave labor options they have?

I don't have problem with private prisons but there is a legitimate issue that if the profits of these industries are threatened that they might push politicians to increase prison times..etc..etc.

On the other hand, how is the government forming a contract with a prison any more dangerous than them forming a contract with the handcuff company that sells handcuffs to the prisoners.

It is a question. How come one is more dangerous than the other. I agree that the corporations that run these prisons might seek to increase jail times to increase profits but why doesn't any other company that sells services to the government do the same thing?

With freedom comes great responsibility. The war on drugs is a failure. The government should be there to regulate the industry, not drive it underground.

If you know the difference between cuffs and jails then you know why one is more dangerous than the other. Unless you think handcuffs are just like being locked in jail. If thats the case I cant help you.

The prison industry lobby is tiny compared to the LAWYER LOBBY, which cares only about itself, and not the harm it does to the US. The lawyer lobby is the main obstacle to national legalization.

I'm not saying the Prison Industry is king of the mountain. I'm just saying they have money, influence and to make a profit they have to ensure more people are in their jails.

The "Prison Industrial Complex" is a term used for Prisons, Police, and Lawyers.
