Why Can't Poor People Afford Healthy Food?

I'm not going to read this whole thread, but while I agree that fast food can be recreated using items bought at a grocery store for about the same amount or less, I do agree that generally, the healthiest food is the most expensive.

You can't buy anything with an organic label on it that isn't far more expensive than those without it, it just doesn't happen, it costs more to produce it.

And who knows if the organic you're paying for is REALLY better for you, or not.

Organic is overrated tho bro. Take it from me, I'm a nutrition nut.

If it's a Monsanto product it's probably not, with all their GMO bullshit. They have carte blanche to slap the Organic label on shit that your local farmer isn't allowed to.

It probably is for the most part.

There are certain things that I do prefer to be grown in a relatively natural sense though, even if it's all in my head.

Because its too expensive.

Do you know that it is cheaper to buy a jumbo bag of potato chips and a 2 litre bottle of coke than it is to buy a loaf of bread and a bottle of water?

I don't know where the **** you're shopping but a jumbo bag of chips costs like $3 at least, and a 2 liter Coke is about $1.79

A loaf of bread is about $2 and a bottle of water is .99

It's not more expensive to eat healthy if you shop smart. You get a big bag of long grain rice, broccoli .99/lb here where i live, and a bunch of tilapia filets at $5.99/lb.

You'll spend more taking your family out for value meals at Mcd's, and those groceries will get you more than 1 dinner.

That's it right there...more than 1 meal.

And with at least nominal nutritional value. There's no nutritional value in a mcchicken sandwich and fries, I'm pretty sure.

We eat tilapia pretty frequently...though the other night we ate a big old trout and oysters. My daughter caught the fish....the oysters I did buy, and it was sort of a splurge...$3.99/jar...just enough for everyone who wanted it to get some.

But the fish was free.

I try not to think about where tilapia come from...they use them to clean the bass farm tanks.

Blech.

Tilapia is just a generic name for cichlid fish that come from Africa and So. America. No different than perch, really.

I live off tilapia. Omega 3's, protein, etc. Lately my dinner consists almost every night of those 3 groceries I mentioned, and it never gets old.

I'm pretty good at discerning good from crap veggies.

Generally speaking, the good veggies are dirtier and drier. The ones that are packaged, shiny clean, sparkling...those are generally lovely to look at, but not high quality eating.

Most of the cheap tilapia that hits our supermarke freezers these days are the ones who clean the farmed bass tanks...

but I don't think about it.

Well cichlids are herbivores...most of them anyway. They graze on algae. It's not as bad as it might sound. It's no different than if they were living off spirulina flakes or whatever.

Once upon a time, tilapia was breed in a way where most of the fish would be male (which allows the fish to grow larger to a marketable size). However, they soon discovered a nifty little trick. If they put testosterone in their feed for the first few months, they would all turn male. Now, I haven’t read of any adverse health effects from people eating testosterone feed fish. But I find the practice a little disturbing and unnatural. Not all fisheries use this practice, but it is very common. Secondly, some fish farms use growth hormones. We avoid growth hormones carefully in our meat, so why would we consume fish that contains it?
Their Food
While some fisheries may still use their natural food ( like duckweed), many, if not most fisheries feed them corn. Tilapia are easy to grow because, like pigs, they will eat anything, including “poop”. So it’s quite easy to grow them on corn. First, the corn is probably genetically modified. That has it’s own problems. Secondly, this high in corn diet leads to fish that’s high in Omega 6′s.
Wait, a minute! High in Omega 6 Fatty Acids?
High in Omega 6 Fatty Acids
One of the biggest health benefits of eating fish is getting Omega 3′s. You aren’t going to find that in Tilapia. In fact, you may be doing harm instead of good by eating it!"

I don't know if there's a motive behind that article, but I know tilapia isn't generally a wild caught fish...not anymore.

So in other words they eat the bass poop?

I do understand what you mean about them being in tanks though. But a well kept tank is no dirtier than their natural environment, or at least it shouldn't be.

I don't know about that. I used to keep fish tanks and cichlids were my species of choice. Not the same species that tilapia is from, but cichlids are mostly herbivores. I've never seen one take in a piece of fish crap and not spit it out.

15th post
Back to topic and again...I think eating healthy doesn't have to be too expensive! That's a proven fact!

Yeah, they eat bass poop.

Dirty Jobs did a show on them....that's how I found out.

Everything I read says to be careful eating those that originate in China (check the frozen ones that are sold in bags) because of pollutants/lower standards...

So are they just those little things they call scumsuckers, which attach themselves to the side of the fish tank and proceed to vacuum off the crud?

"It appears to me that the TILAPIA EAT POOP folks were ultimately informed (directly or indirectly) by the Vomit Island episode of the Dirty Jobs television show, on the Discovery Channel. In this episode, tilapia are used to clean the poo that has accumulated in the tanks of hybrid striped bass. Fear not, though: not all farmed tilapia are fed on waste matter."

Oh good..they don't ALL eat poop, lol....

“TILAPIA EAT POOP” (really?) « Cleaner Plate Club

The kids eat it weekly, probably. If I crave fish, I go to the fish market or we catch our own. I am pretty picky about it...
