If anything, Japan should have been more seriously affected by Covid. Their population average is older and they are far more concentrated demographically.
But they took this seriously.
They did masks and social distancing.
They closed down non-essential functions, including cancelling the 2020 Olympics.
Now some things are cultural. While Americans hug, kiss, or shake hands when they greet each other, the Japanese just do that little bowing thing that they do. I am sure this did a lot to reduce the spread of the disease.
