From riding on MARTA in Atlanta through some really bad areas like West End, let me offer some advice.....

1). If you're not of dark skin, cover yourself completely head to toe and wear shades if you don't have brown eyes.
(YES....white people DO THIS in Atlanta when riding Marta). Or wear Muslim attire. Muslims don't get attacked.

2). DO NOT act like a tourist or afraid. Be bold and confident if you can.

3). Carefully observe who is around the seats before you sit down, or remain standing with your back protected. Never, ever sit with a potential threat behind you.

4). Pay careful attention to anyone that keeps looking at you. They are sizing you up for their next victim.

5). Fake like you're getting off at a stop, then don't. If you see someone move to get off with you, they have selected you. And don't get off the bus or train in a lonely place if you suspect you have been selected as a victim. Keep in mind in Atlanta, these thugs have no problem attacking you boldly while still on the bus or train. If they get off with you, have a plan or be prepared to fight possibly more than one attacker. And DO NOT make the mistake of thinking one or more females won't attack you.
If you've just arrived in town from a flight for example, you won't have any weapons with you.

It's only fair to point out that for a long time, lone blacks encountered the exact same thing from whites when traveling through the wrong white areas. Again, reality can be brutal.

We have to be fair and take everything in context.
Nothing makes it "ok", regardless of the color of ones skin imo.
