You think of the explanition by way of the shamrock.![]()
My priest is Irish. It's a lesson he frequently teaches.
The shamrock is what got all the Irishmen converted.

I wonder why Kateri Tekakwitha was not made Patron Saint of the US. That would have been original.
In America, we already have St. Katiri Tekakwitha, born in what is present day New York, the first Native American saint. Hopefully we'll soon have St. Nicholas Black Elk, who is from Wyoming but spent much of his life right here in South Dakota. I don't know for sure where his cause for canonization is.

.US states may also have patron saints.
California has Junipero Serra as patron.
I visited St. Rose's tomb at the Santo Domingo convent in Lima about 9 years ago. Amazing place, all around..
Patron Saint of the US is Our Lady, the Blessed Virgin.
Patron Saint of the Americas, as far as I know, is Saint Rose of Lima, the first saint canonized from the New World.
.
I have googled for him..
Looks like our future Patron Saint for South Dakota will be Nicholas Black Elk.

Black Elk: Future Patron Saint and Model for Instituted Lay Catechists?
Nicholas Black Elk, a Lakota holy man and catechist, up for sainthood has captured the attention of Pope Francis and could be a model for bishops instituting lay catechists.www.ncregister.com

.I have googled for him.
in German his name would be Schwarzer Hirsch.![]()
.you are welcome!
Google said Hirsch, but Elk could also be Elch in German.
I would prefer Elch.![]()
I agree! Language is also one of my hobbies..
Same word. Far easier to remember.
I looked up "deer" and also got "Hirsch". Some cultures here use the word deer interchangeably for any of the animals that are ungulates -- hoofed herbivores.
Language is so much fun.

.Patron Saints are a never ending topic.
There are also Patrons for Cities, for persons, and for occupations.
I looked up chaplet, and found that is similar to a Rosary, a Rosenkranz in German..
I love learning about the Saints. I make Rosaries and this fall, I'm making prayer chaplets for as many of the Saints as I can find, for sale at our Fall Festival, to benefit the Altar Society at my church.
I'd love to find a St. Lawrence Chaplet. What a wonderful story!
Our priest uses stories about lots of Saints in his homilies and St. Lawrence made us laugh.
.
.Professions also have patron saints.
but i think a better open another thread for that topic.![]()
