Oh France did want revenge and that was for their defeat 40 years before. There wasn't a hope in hell they wouldn't honor their treaties. They weren't going to be fighting the Germans on their own this time. The reparations everyone imposed bankrupted Germany and that was for revenge and other reasons. Now it makes me wonder what French textbooks say about the Franco-Prussian war.
