This question has to be a mystery to most American. It was to me until this very day.
We all know that when George Washington defeated the British, a treaty was signed.

What was the name of the place it was signed?

I won't make you look it up. I will not keep you guessing.

I am not insulting any here. But be honest. Did you know that or had you looked it up?

I thought it was the Pelosi Accord ?

You sure you're right there?

Why is this fact, or the separate ability to recall this fact useful? What would someone lose or miss in life if he took a pause and looked it up?
Damn, I figured everyone knew that! That was a test question back in the day.

Is American History taught in US schools anymore?

Good thing I'm not "educated". ;)

The alternative is we look stupid when others discuss our own history.

When I was in high school, for me US History just did not interest me. I managed to be as a student virtually as if I had not gone to class or read books on subjects I was not interested in. It was a lousy time for my school and me to be like that then. I graduated high school in 1956 so more recent history for us now, then was still in the future.

A couple of answers. First, I have been an American for a long time now. Never, in any conversation I have had, has that piece of trivia been a necessary component. Next, once one has the entire expanse of human knowledge in his hands, why does he need personal recall of something he can look up?

I would not reach the point it is necessary. If one is not interested in history, even if he can look it up, chances he won't do that.
