In my small town, a white male just slaughtered his wife, his mother-in-law, and a 16 year old boy who was protecting his three sons from him. He also shot a cop four times, critically wounding him.

The wife was a friend of my wife. She was staying in a women's shelter run by a friend of ours.

I guess she left too soon...

I dealt with a lot of domestic violence cases on active duty. It was very frustrating to see almost every woman who was a victim of domestic violence would refuse to press charges and would return to their abuser.

That is all too often a fatal mistake.

Whenever I was OOD, the base police would groan when they saw me. Almost every time, we would get a domestic violence call.

I got so tired of taking these women to the ER and then them refusing to press charges.

And it was always the same families.

One morning during my debrief with the XO, I asked him if I could take pictures of these women and make a photo album.

"This is you in three months." Then turn the page. "This is you in six months." Turn the page. "This is you in one year."

The XO put the kibosh on the idea.
