White House Senses Political Risk on Healthcare Despite Shutdown Bravado

‘Trump has projected unwavering confidence that he is winning the messaging war over the government shutdown. But behind the scenes, his team is increasingly concerned that the issue at the center of the debate will create political vulnerabilities for Republicans.

Advisers are worried that the GOP will take the blame for allowing healthcare subsidies to expire, raising costs for millions of Americans ahead of next year’s midterm elections, according to administration officials.

Inside the White House, aides are discussing proposals to extend the enhanced subsidies for Affordable Care Act health-insurance plans, the officials said. Trump hasn’t yet decided whether he will endorse such a proposal, according to the officials. Republicans say they will only hold negotiations with Democrats on the matter after the government is reopened.

The closed-door hand-wringing stands in contrast to the public bravado conveyed by the president and his top advisers. Trump has posted artificial-intelligence videos of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D., N.Y.) wearing a sombrero. And he has said the shutdown gives his administration an “unprecedented opportunity” to make far-reaching cuts and target programs favored by Democrats. The administration is preparing to oust thousands of federal workers.’

Extending the subsidies for the ACA shouldn’t even be an issue, ending the subsidies should not have been in the reckless, irresponsible legislation passed by Republicans – that legislation and the current shutdown is typical of the right’s insanity and contempt for sound, responsible governance.

Republicans have only themselves to blame, being responsible for increasing healthcare costs for millions of Americans.

As for Trump posting AI videos, further proof Trump is a racist, bigot, and unfit to hold any public office.
It only applies to illegals

Without a yard stick of some sort, just watching nominal numbers go up over time doesn't tell you much. Nominal numbers always go up over time.

If you look at the health spending numbers as a share of GDP, or as a share of per capita personal incomes, etc you'll find that they essentially stopped growing in 2010.
I appreciate the thoughtful response. I think what you are describing is partially captured in the blue line on that graph which is inflation adjusted and it shows basically what you are describing - a slow steady growth.

But, if as you described, you compare it to GDP or income growth its flattened. Here is what you described.

"Raise your hand if your government plan would provide coverage for undocumented immigrants," NBC News anchor Savannah Guthrie asked while moderating the June 2019 debate followed by all ten Democrats on stage raising their hands.
Holy **** Q-NUT.

You are consistently dumber than the rest of your short bus cult.
What is wrong with providing access to health insurance to illegal immigrants?

Our health care system is a nightmare. I don't think the care you receive is necessarily bad - if you can get it. 40,000 billing codes to thousands of recipients to shortages of doctors and healthcare workers.
I'll be the 1st conservative to say this - something has to be done.
Medicare is a scam. A person retired on 1200/month SS should not be required to pay a third of it towards Medicare. And another third to taxes, copays, meds, etc. Not much left to live on.
If you are an American citizen and have a SS number, you should have access to quality health care. Period.
The government must take over this broken system to protect it's citizens.

1) you are rewarding illegal behavior
2) it encourages aliens to come here illegally
3) the programs were created for legal residents and it’s a drain on the debt and on the programs

Tell me, do you see anything wrong with coming here illegally?

1) you are rewarding illegal behavior
Nope.
Would you rather have them NOT carry insurance?
2) it encourages aliens to come here illegally
The jobs do.
They don't come here for the great insurance plans available.
3) the programs were created for legal residents and it’s a drain on the debt and on the programs
What programs?
Insurance?
LOL.
Tell me, do you see anything wrong with coming here illegally?
Yeah, they're stupid as ****.
If I were an illegal immigrant with no family or ties to the US, it would be the last place I would go.

No more free healthcare for the illegals

Be careful what you wish for.

If you are retired and over 65 Medicare is free. You do need to buy Medigap insurance for what Medicare doesn't cover, it should cost $200 a month. not $400. Hopefully you have a pension or investments to help your finances.

Medicare for everyone means healthcare for no one, the system would be overwhelmed.

Medicare is NOT free for retired people over 65. And the price goes up every year. I pay $170 for Medicare, $130 for the supplemental, and an additional $40 for Part D (the prescription part).

Total cost for insurance per month is $340.

P.S. Just looked it up: Medicare is going to $206 in 2026. That means my monthly insurance will be $376 a month.

P.P.S. Why should middle class people of working age get subsidies that bring their Obamacare insurance costs to LESS than senior citizens?

1. OK, we get our Medicare Part-B premium deducted from our SS payments, currently $185mo.
2. We also pay for the "donut hole" "supplemental.
3. ...and we pay for the Part-D prescription part

So I agree that we pay somewhat more than your $340 a month for Medicare plus some prescription coverage

However, if you look at families who do not get healthcare thru work, and need to buy from ACA, their costs are much higher.
Subsidized premiums of $888/mo in 2025 would go to $1,904 if the subsidies expire.
A family of 4 without a subsidy, premiums would start at $1,500 a month and go up from there.
So subsidized ACA premiums ($900/mo) would not be less than we seniors pay, but more importantly, family coverage without a subsidy would be unaffordable.

My recommendation is for Republicans to pass "Trumpcare" subsidies with the "pay-fors" being the $200b DOGE savings as well as other "claw-backs", rescissions, and other cuts to spending. I prefer getting votes instead of seeing those commercials of Republicans throwing granny over the cliff again, and losing voters. Besides, we need more family formation, not less.

Republicans are up to making a deal but not at the 100% democrats want.

Obama took a system where the majority of Americans could afford health insurance and put in place one where the majority of Americans need public assistance for it.
That's not how I remember healthcare before the ACA. Maybe this will jog your memory?
Or are you just talking about people who got healthcare insurance thru employers?

And now virtually NOBODY can afford it unless they get government assistance.

Insurance premiums have skyrocketed since Obama decided taxpayers should subsidize them. Same thing with college tuition.

The answer to overpriced health insurance is to cover LESS care, not more.

Because democrats let 12,000,000 illegals into the US and gave them free food, free housing, free healthcare, and free education, so who do you think paid for all of that free stuff?

Skyrocketing college tuition is a separate topic. That's because colleges don't lose money if kids can't find jobs or pay their student loans back. Colleges need to have loan "skin" in the game.
Actually getting more people insured should lower costs. Throwing people off healthcare could bite Republicans in the ass in 2026 and 2028. I'd rather see "Trumpcare", whereby Trump gets "pay-fors" to keep the subsidies. If congress passes laws to cut spending to pay for the subsidies, its a win-win-win. DOGE identified $200b, there are rescission bills to claw-back $billions of "waste, fraud, and abuse" from Biden's stupid presidency. We could even fix SS and Medicare as part of the deal. I'd rather gain millions of voters than lose millions of voters.

C Clayton, if you cared anything about colored people, you'd demand your party open the government. OK? That's the part you can control. That's what you personally can do. So do it.
