I hope the mods will leave this in current events. This goes beyond sports.

A remarkable career is about to end.

Vin Scully began calling Dodger baseball games in 1950. He's still at it today.

Think about this folks, this man has been doing play by play for the Dodgers years before they moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles. I grew up listening to this guy in LA.

On October 2nd in San Francisco, Vinny will call his final game after 67 seasons. Think about that for a minute.

(NOTE: the simulcast referred to here is Scully's last HOME game. His actual last scheduled game is Oct 2nd. He has already stated he will not be part of the Dodger post season)

I wasn't born until 1990, this answers your thread title.

No doubt only a tiny percent of forum members here were even born when Scully
started his career.

I entered the first grade. I remember even today that the first grade teacher asked us all what year it was. Only one little smart ass knew. He yelled out "1950!" . I had absolutely no idea what the little genius was talking about.

I adored the Dodgers when they moved to LA and listened to every one of their radio broadcasts. Even took a portable radio with me when I went to watch them at the Coliseum.

Just think Lucy, this guy was broadcasting baseball games 40 years before you were born, and he's still at it.

1950's.

The era when away-from-home baseball games were done on radio by "telegraphic re-creation" with ticker-tape background, recorded sound effects, by a very imaginative announcer. Following from Wikipedia....

Golden age
During the Golden Age of Radio, television sports broadcasting was in its infancy, and radio was still the main form of broadcasting baseball.[12] Many notable broadcasters, such as Mel Allen, Red Barber, Harry Caray, Russ Hodges, Ernie Harwell, and Vin Scully, started in this period.

However, broadcasting still did not look like the way it does today—recreations of games based on telegrams, the original means of broadcasting, were still widely used.[16] The Liberty Broadcasting System operated solely through recreations of games, because live games were too expensive.[17] Gordon McLendon broadcast games throughout the South from 1948 until 1952, when new blackout regulations forced him to stop.[14][18][19] The Mutual Broadcasting System also broadcast a Game of the Day in the 1950s.[14][20]

VIn Scully....the greatest voice in baseball

I wonder what his final words will be in that final broadcast?

I'd go for something like this, just as that final out is made:

"Well ladies and gents. It took 67 seasons to get here, and one out to end it all"

I don't know about baseball, but when I was in Texas I was taken to Texas Rangers games and I took my opera glasses with me because I wanted to look at the players asses and yes they had very nice asses, those pants they wear are very appreciated.
