What’s happening? Alarming poll finds that half of Americans do not care about the World Cup

Give it a try, *****.
I didn't waste my time on sissy sports like American Football or Ice Hockey.

I participated for a long time in real MAN sports - like Rugby and Field Hockey.
Neither did I practice sissy martial arts sports - padded and with headgear and gloves.

The World Cup 2026 begins today and, according to a new poll, many Americans don't really care.

More than 4 in 10 American respondents to a new poll from Emerson College said they weren't interested in this year's tournament.

One American interviewed said, "Soccer? World Cup? Isn't that, that obscure game that involves adults aimlessly kicking a ball back and forth to each other for 90 minutes, but if someone actually scores a goal or two while you sit and watch the grass on the field as they play, that announcer yells and goes nuts screaming, "Goal"!!! a few times during the game that something actually happens of interest?

Another interviewed said, "I don't watch, not because I'm homophobic, it's just that I don't like the sport is all, so please don't judge me."

Then another person interviewed chimed in saying, "The reason America never has a good team in the past at these World Cup events is probably because none of the players have actually played before and therefore don't even know what the rules of the sport are when they arrive at the World Cup to play."

No word yet on whether the officials of the World Cup can find another country that could care less about soccer than in the US, but they are trying. Currently a stadium is being built in Antarctica for a possible destination for the future World Cup. However, it is rumored that penguins are crazy about the sport just like the rest of the world is crazy about the sport. If so, the even may have to be moved back to the United States as a result.

It's not an American Game, too slow. Personally I like it.

For me Soccer was something I liked but never wanted to play. Too much running not enough hitting.

In that case it wouldn't be called American Football - but simply RUGBY - were real MEN play without padding and a helmet.
Rugby is tough. Are there more injuries in the game than American football. Also, American football is a number of seconds for each play while Rugby is nonstop.

Let that damn ball go when you go down. My buddy suffered a detached Retina from it.

I wouldn't go near it.

In the 1970s here in Florida me and other high school teens met and shook hands with Pele and other big stars of the sport and had no idea who they were. Our coach thought we were being rude he was German but we explained they just don't show it on TV here or mention it much in the news media. We seen Pele a lot jogging down a dirt road west of Orlando where he lived.
Transfer students would yell at us when they found out who all we met.
Pele told our coach not be upset Orlando area is where can relax ,go to the mall without any crowds gathering.
Here in Florida the big sports were American football ,basket ball, baseball and auto racing. Soccer was way down the list of popularity.

If you want to have a nap, have a nap. Don’t make someone knock you the **** out.

And rack up far more injuries, some leading to lifetime debilities.

Yeah, sure thing Charlie, ...
Apparently you don't practice truth, along with "care about facts nor morality".

It's gained a bit more popularity since then.
For a few years now we've spent Saturday mornings this time of year at the huge county soccer fields, watching the grand-kids play in local league teams. About two dozen "fields"/play areas of such starting with a few small ones only a couple dozen yards long for the 4-5 year olds teams, then progressively large for the older ages up to a couple of full regulation sized for older teens~adults.

American culture is predominantly toxic individualistic, so America has American Football (handball if you want to be specific). Most of the rest of the world take part in football as a collective sport.

Soccer is field hockey without the sticks. :th_smiley_emoticons_gaehn:
It's actually an accurate descriptive game, it mainly involves a foot and a ball, hence the name football. Another one is where hands and feet pass and kick the ball, that's called Rugby Football.

Then there's the girly version of Rugby that mainly involves the hands, that's called American Handball.

And I don't even follow football. I only go to 2 or 3 Man U games a year with my mate for the food and beer, lol.

Soccer is a fast, exciting game but scores are low. Much ado about nothing, IMO. Just a bunch of guys running across a field. Worse than basketball.

Those guys are in some shape, I'll give them that. I tried playing soccer once with some guys from work many years ago when I was in basketball shape. The first couple weeks I thought I was going to die! Sheesh that field is big!
