This is an example of one of the finest false equivalences of all time. It is based on a sermon Rev. Jeremiah Wright preached long before Barack Obama ran for president. This “controversy” was based on words cherry picked from Rev. Jeremiah Wrights sermon, "Confusing God and Government", delivered on April 13, 2003. Barack Obama was not really known on the national scene until he spoke at the 2004 Democratic Convention. This sermon was preached while Obama was either a representative in the Illinois senate or working as a community organizer in Chicago.

“Long before there was a red, white and blue colonization, the Egyptian government was doing colonization. They colonized half the continent of Africa, they colonized parts of the Mediterranean. All colonizers ain't white. Turn to your neighbor and say "oppressors come in all colors. Hello, hello, hello."​

Wrights sermon was about the failure of mans government as opposed to Gods law. The words these racists complained about were not racist or spoken by Obama. Based upon documented history, what Wright said in his sermon was 100 percent accurate. But white racists wanted to make it racism because they were looking for a way to stop Obama and tried using his church membership to race bait other whites. Rev. Wright is a black man who dared speak out against the wrongs of government as seen by blacks, therefore he must be opposed and silenced in a self declared “democracy.” White racists can complain about how bad the government is all they want but let a black person or anyone else not white do so, then they hate America and are racists while white racists call themselves patriots.

“This Government lied about their belief that all men were created equal. The truth was they believe all White men were created equal. The truth is they did not believe that even White women were created equal, in creation nor in civilization. The Government had to pass an amendment to the Constitution to get White women the vote. Then the Government had to pass an “Equal Rights” amendment to get equal protection under the law for women. The Government lied about the Gulf of Tonkin – they wanted that resolution to get us into the Vietnam War. Governments lie! The Government lied about Nelson Mandela, and our CIA helped put him in prison and keep him there for 27 years. The South African Government lied on Nelson Mandela. Governments lie! Turn back to your neighbor and say again “Governments lie.” The Government lied about the Tuskegee experiment; they purposely infected African-American men with syphilis. Governments lie! The Government lied about bombing Cambodia, and Richard Nixon stood in front of the camera, “Let me make myself perfectly clear, we are not –“ Governments lie! The Government lied about the drugs for arms Contras scheme, orchestrated by Oliver North and then they pardoned – the Government pardoned – all of the perpetrators so they could get better jobs in the Government. Governments lie!

The Government lied about inventing the HIV-virus as a means of genocide against people of color. Governments lie! The Government lied about a connection between Al-Qaida and Saddam Hussein, and a connection between 9/1-1/01 and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Governments lie! The Government lied about Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq being a threat to the United States’ peace. And guess what else? If they don’t find them some Weapons of Mass Destruction, they’re going to do just like that LAPD and plant them some Weapons of Mass Destruction. Governments lie!”​

So while Obama was forced to denounce a preacher for words Obama did not speak, Donald Trump got away with making racist comments about blacks, Mexicans, and individuals from the Middle East. He got to make sexist comments about women. He got to make xenophobic comments and religious bigoted statements about Muslims. No one made him denounce his history of Department of Justice LAWSUITS for racial discrimination in housing long before he ran for president which is documented in the legal record. Instead Trump got protected and elected to run this country. This is white privilege.
