oh----my impression is----that it is an organization with MEMBER states-----that are members VOLUNTARILY----
and who agree to MUTUAL defense----via a TREATY.

It is an organization setup by US to increase the US military footprint around the globe so US has the upperhand against the communist expansion.

It is only by the help of NATO footprint, US was able to develop the ballistic missile defense system that would prevent any nation on the planet to reach US soil by their long range ballistic missiles and at the same time give US the ability to reach any nations economic strategic cultural cores by her middle range ballistic missiles which are extremely hard to intercept due to their design.

If you like the luxury to be untouchable , you gotta pay for it. Nothing is free on this planet.

The reason these Trump people think some other countries will aggree to pay for the luxury of Americans is because they dont know jack shit about the rock they happened to come to life up on...

If US to kick Poland out of NATO because they didnt pay some fee thats a lousy pocket change for US, then US would lost all their radar systems against the Russian intercontinental ballistic missiles...

The removal of the unnecessary anti-Russian stuff would improve the relationship with Russia. There will be no missiles flying anyway and even if we enforce this theoretical scenario, Russian missiles would likely attack America from the east and not from the west. After all the justification is Iranian missiles, anyway. Russia said since you have a deal with Iran, the missile shield lacks of any base.
So why do all that stuff that has only one impact and purpose: Keep the states in vicinity to Russia in line with a military presence incapable of posing a threat to Russia.
President Trump ("Nato is obsolete") will maybe withdraw from the region, anyway. The US has no business there and - honestly - things haven´t improved here since the Nato reestablished the iron curtain in Europe.

Trump says, you don´t know if your nukes still work. He says, you are no match in cyber. He says, he is not going to talk about what he will do because things run better if kept secret.
