Yes they are good indicators and special elections prove it. Democrats have won a large number of Republican held seats as well as in Trump's Mara-Largo. The polls in 2016 are likely why she lost. Too many people expected her to win so they didn't bother to vote. Had the turnout doubled, Trump would have lost.
