Better than the Obama deal? Are you serious? We gave them pallets of cash and lifted sanctions and they gave us a promise that they wouldn't continue their nuclear program which they immediately reneged on! The Obama deal sucked! Don't know how else to put it! It was a deal put together by naive people who thought if they were nice to Iran then Iran would be nice to us!
I think we both agree that what most of the world would like to see is regime change in Iran. I also think we both agree that putting boots on the ground in Iran to accomplish that would be foolhardy. Iran doesn't have a navy...they don't have an airforce. What they do have is an army. A large one. I think Trump has played this beautifully so far. We're not losing American lives. We're not bogged down like Russia in Ukraine. We control the airspace over Iran. We control the water around Iran. The blockade was a stroke of genius. If Iran can't sell it's oil it can't sustain the IRGC. They're running out of money. If the IRGC won't show up and slaughter protesters then this regime will fall. The people remember the 30,000 protesters that the IRGC murdered a few months ago. If there isn't an armed force doing that the people of Iran WILL take to the streets just like when the Shah was overthrown!
The Iran deal from the Obama admin might not have been great, but it was something. After all the times the US and Israel have claimed that Iran is months, or weeks, away from nukes, having SOME kind of deal seems like an improvement over the status quo. That assumes, of course, that all the fear-mongering about Iran getting nukes was based on reality, rather than being just political rhetoric. And there is currently NO deal, NO oversight at all, so yes, I want to see a new deal that is a clear improvement on the old one.
Iran may not have a navy or air force, yet they are still capable of attacking other countries in the region and making shipping through the Strait of Hormuz dangerous, at best.
The families and friends of the 13 DEAD US SERVICE MEMBERS would disagree with your claim that we aren't losing American lives.
The hope that the Iranian people will overthrow the government is fine, but not something to base a war on. And it's easy to say while living in the US; the people of Iran have a much different reality to try to live with.
We do have some common ground, you are right about that. And I appreciate that you've been civil about our disagreements; thank you for that. I don't think this war has been handled well, but I hope we both get to see the sort of change in Iran that we'd like to see.
