What is the purpose of tariffs on Canada?

Realistically, the objective is to raise prices for consumers in the U.S. and in Canada.

It promises to be very successful, and a delight for Xi Jinping.

Well, if it is trade imbalance he is looking at getting Canadian Oil and Gas...

Europe want both of them in time, and if Trump goes the way he is, they will get them too... Canada and EU are getting closer and closer as US isolates themselves.

You say there are tariffs because US has a trade defiecit with Canda...

In my OP I offered to sort that out... The Trade deficit is about $170 billion, if Canada cuts all Oil, Gas and aluminium exports to US then that will be all stored. IT would be effectively zero...

Just in case you are worried:
  • Gas: Both China and Japan are fighting over Gas supply (Japan won, I think)
  • Oli : Europe & China refineries are all interested.
  • Aluminium: is pretty easy to sell on the global market.
On the Aluminium, must congratulate Trump on imposing a tax on using new aluminium. US is going be using more and more recycled Aluminium, they at presently recycle 3/5s, but I say that will be way higher.

The Candian Foreign Minister offered to do this when tariffs were first mentioned...

Again, write down demands, as it is confusing what Trump really wants...
Never considered having to ship raw crude oil overseas, have they? That's why we sell Alaskan oil to Japan instead of shipping it to the east and gulf coasts.

Aluminium? Which Kanuck or Brit are you?

Please tell us what the Tariffs on Canada are meant to achieve?
So lets say it is going to cost $450 per household per year

what it's target?

What metric will signify success?

Note:
There is barely any fentanyl that comes across the border.

---------
So maybe it is the trade imbalance... I don't know what balancing this does... It doesn't benefit either side...

United States Imports from Canada was US$421.21 Billion

Canada Imports from United States was US$277.04 Billion

So if Canada stops exporting Oil, Gas and Aluminium to US then that could balance up...
I know some will say that would kill US refining industry and severely hurt US exports (of Refined Oil and Gas) but this has to be balanced if that is the goal.

So what is the aim of these tariffs?
Canada puts tariffs on US products, what is the purpose of that. Italy puts 100% tariffs of Harley motorcycles, why? so Italians will buy Italian motorcycles. it makes a lot of sense if you actually think about it for a split second.

Drugs. You fkers really don't follow the bouncing balls.

You know Canada has always had tariffs on us, right?

So I'm still waiting on who pays the cost of the tariffs? I thought all you fkers said the US citizens did, so why does it matter to Canada if we put a tariff on their imports?

Americans only pay tariffs if they buy foreign products, no tariffs on American products sold in America. it is amazing how many people refuse to understand how this works to help American companies and small businesses.

well Red, they hate america. That should be quite clear now.

Canada can fix the problem and solve the problem. Let me guess! You are one of our resident Kanucks?
Canada can solve people overstaying visas in US?

This is the longest land border in the world and Canada has invested in security of it... Increasing it just last December.

You still haven't answered my questions:
  • Where is there a clear list of demands with clear targets?
  • What is the price of transgressions as these are met?
  • How is this policed?
  • Which court has a final say?
  • If the butt of weed is found, How long must both US and Canada suffer?

The problem here is that there is very little transgressions, we have to be crystal clear what is a transgression and what is the expected outcome to business, if it happens..
US Businesses need to know too... There is risk of doing business, we need to assess that risk and some need to take out insurance against it happening.

with the Prime Minister and his team. Why is that difficult, because they didn't include you? hahahahahahhaha

Not confusing at all. Trump wants to reduce deficits and the debt. Our trading partners should help with this. Details to be worked out after tariffs bring everyone to the table.

I am just saying that Canada doesn't have to sell you stuff... They got other markets...

No need for the trade deficit...

How can Trump adjust for the fact that we have 300 million more people than Canada? I cant wait for your brilliant answer.

So you want to use government to subsidize American business owners.

Are we talking

Trade Deficits?
Oil, Gas and Alum can sort that.

OR

Federal Deficit & National Debt?
You know Canada has nothing to do with US Federal Deficit. I mean nothing, how US wants to spend their taxes is their business... Do you want Canada to take over US treasury?

In trade agreement signed by Trump in 2020...
Due for review next year.

If got huge problems, ask for it to be brought forward...

Might start with being more specific on what is wrong with it..

FYI, there is no such thing as a Trade Debt... Think about it...
I think they don't understand that
Trade Deficit is not Federal Deficit
They are not related at all...

Tariffs punish businesses that import stuff, and consumers that buy that stuff. No problem if there is balanced trade but when you have a $37Trillion cumulative trade deficit something has to be done.
