What is the purpose of tariffs on Canada?

Have you a clue what trade is about...

I have something you want and you have something I want... We both agree that what the other has is more valuable to us, so we trade... We are not bot better off... It is a simple Win win, which has been in existence since cavemen..

You have no idea of how macro-economics work in these situations.

We aren't bartering with these people, we trade our hard currency for their products, and they do the same.

The thing is Canada has many far more restrictive tariffs on certain items to protect their own industries.

Why can't we do the same?

In truth Canda likely has no need to import cars from the US as every major car company have factories there. Otherwise, you are on target. Fire for effect!
Factories produce specific models. The F150, for example, is made in the US, imported to Canada. But is has parts from Canada, US, and Mexico. That's how the car industry works. Has worked for the past 60 years, starting with the Auto Pact.

Seriously, zero tolerance?

So for starters all those US Citizens in Russian jails should be left there...

While if a Canadian decides to nip down to Walmart and goes through a boarder crossing that is closed... You want to impose billions of dollars of tariffs on US customers...
BTW, the Canadian is usually just escorted to the border and given a warning or Title 42.. What's the point?

The same if someone is caught butt end of weed in his pocket... Billions imposed... The guy might have gone north that day with in his pocket, unknown to himself...

Is this your Zero Tolerance?

So how long after one of these infractions are the tariffs going to be put in place? This is a massive disturbance to business...
For drugs, absolutely. Griner should still be in jail for stupidity.

Same for your "guy" with the butt end in his pocket.

Wrong. NAFTA was in place. It was scheduled to be re-negotiated during his first term. He said he didn't like NAFTA and negotiated a "great deal", called it USMCA. He owns that.
USMCA is scheduled to be looked at next year. Imposing those tariffs just signals the world that treaties with the US are not worth the paper they're written on.
Trump is making US a lot more risky to invest in...
How can you commit to a multibillion dollar, multi-year build with an ROI that might take 10 years with this going on...

Stable economies can work with lower margins as there is less risk... This is why people do business in the 1st world...

At the moment, you can trust business that relies on goods that have to go in or out of US borders... If you need Federal Approval, you are in uncertain territory too...

This is just bad business... Tariff at the end of the day are just a form of high regulation and taxes... Both things business don't want.

This is why I am asking.

What are the targets of these tariffs?
What is US meant to get out of this, where is their demands in this trade war?

If it's the trade imbalance, I said just sending US Oil, Gas and Aluminium.
If it is Illegal Drugs, Canada is spending $1.3bn on border security... Do they want more... The level of illegal Drugs over that border is pretty minimal.
If it is illegal immigrants, again small on the border... Most people just overstay... Saying that a person can enter a country or not is primarily the receiving country's decision.

Don't need to go look for anything. The Canadians put tariffs on American goods all the time. WE have always been the lowest tariff setting nation IN THE WORLD>>FOR EVER
All the president WAnts is a level playing field. Why do we have to enrich them at OUR EXPENSE. Stop yer whining babies.

Empty xenophobic stereotypes.

But what is in effect punishes everyone in US and Canada...

If you want the death penalty for a butt end not matter what their nationality, that is a different law...

Why should there be a collective punishment of two countries for one guy breaking the law?

And how long should they both suffer?

That was in place way before Trump came into office so don't even,

But Biden tried to fix that.....OH.. WAIT.....

False. 100% false.

Trump repudiated NAFTA in 2017. He spent the next four year negotiating USMCA, which didn’t change NAFTA significantly.

Even so, Derp fuhrer touted it as a major accomplishment.

In 2025, Trump repudiated his own treaty.

Yet another proof that Trump is not (aand never has been) trustworthy.

An agreement with Trump is as worthless as his word.

Yep! You are definitely suffering from a liberal attitude. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time punishes only the guilty.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Macroeconomics...

The trade agreement between US and Canada was signed by Trump in 2020 and is due to be reviewed next year...

Tweaks have already been made by Biden... He upped soft Lumber from 8.5% to 14.5%...

So do you want all tariffs gone, cause Trump put in a few tariffs himself at the request of US business...

Why didn't he ask for the trade talks due for next year to be pulled forward?

Also, could you give a list of those tariffs and how much trade it is affecting.. This would be the start...

Google is your friend. I charge for tutoring.
Nobody can find out... Even The Duke here said it was a secret...

Where is there a clear list of demands with clear targets?

What is the price of transgressions as these are met?

How is this policed?

Which court has a final say?

What expense....
A $45Billion trade deficit, part of the overall $800Billion global trade deficit. Just because they are our closest neighbor doesn't give them a pass on tariffs.

However, we are considering certain products for exemption from the tariffs.

But US or Canada didn't do the crime...

The crime might have been done by someone who not from either country...

Conservatives don't believe in collective punishment of 370 million people cause one person does something illegal...

Again, if the butt of weed is found, How long must both US and Canada suffer?

Please tell us what the Tariffs on Canada are meant to achieve?
So lets say it is going to cost $450 per household per year

what it's target?

What metric will signify success?

Note:
There is barely any fentanyl that comes across the border.

So maybe it is the trade imbalance... I don't know what balancing this does... It doesn't benefit either side...

United States Imports from Canada was US$421.21 Billion

Canada Imports from United States was US$277.04 Billion

So if Canada stops exporting Oil, Gas and Aluminium to US then that could balance up...
I know some will say that would kill US refining industry and severely hurt US exports (of Refined Oil and Gas) but this has to be balanced if that is the goal.

So what is the aim of these tariffs?
Realistically, the objective is to raise prices for consumers in the U.S. and in Canada.

It promises to be very successful, and a delight for Xi Jinping.

There has to be an EO establishing the tariff. Look it up if you are so desperate to know.

You say there are tariffs because US has a trade defiecit with Canda...

In my OP I offered to sort that out... The Trade deficit is about $170 billion, if Canada cuts all Oil, Gas and aluminium exports to US then that will be all stored. IT would be effectively zero...

Just in case you are worried:
  • Gas: Both China and Japan are fighting over Gas supply (Japan won, I think)
  • Oli : Europe & China refineries are all interested.
  • Aluminium: is pretty easy to sell on the global market.
On the Aluminium, must congratulate Trump on imposing a tax on using new aluminium. US is going be using more and more recycled Aluminium, they at presently recycle 3/5s, but I say that will be way higher.

The Candian Foreign Minister offered to do this when tariffs were first mentioned...

Again, write down demands, as it is confusing what Trump really wants...

Canada can fix the problem and solve the problem. Let me guess! You are one of our resident Kanucks?
