They are nationalists who oppose the globalism.
On the other hand, they are not what the left claims. Which is what they claim regarding all their enemies... "xenophobes, misogynists, racists.. " basically they perceive any enemy as the next coming of Hitler and an extreme right-winger, no matter how moderate.
>> ... In just one day, the so-called “alt right”—a political faction that spreads white supremacist ideology primarily online—has come to dominate the national news cycle. Today, they’ve had a hashtag, #AltRightMeans, trending on Twitter; they’ve gotten high praise from Donald Trump, who swore up and down this community isn’t racist; and then came the cherry on top: an impassioned speech by Hillary Clinton in which she called out their members, who have banded together behind Trump, by name.
What more could a dark army of trolls want? It didn’t take long until they started celebrating on the same online portals they’ve used as recruiting tools since the term “alt right” first popped up around 2008.
...The term “alt-right” is merely a rebranding of an ideology with deep, dark historic roots, says Jessie Daniels, a professor of sociology at Hunter College and author of the book Cyber Racism. In fact, you could say it’s a “dog whistle” for white supremacy. “People who are in the United States, mostly white people, are uncomfortable saying white supremacy,” Daniels says. “They’re more comfortable saying alt-right” << --- Wired
In other words it seems fair to call it the second coming of the Know Nothing Party.
Actually the third coming. The second came with the Klan.

Above is a perfect example of a racist bigot who thinks his grotesque views are in line with American values.
the Alt right see themselves as "patriots" -- just like the dixiecrats segregationists did back in the 1960's. They didn't think their white kids should have to go to school with or drink from the same fountains as black kids.
Alternative right, a blend of white supremacists, nationalists, Nazi lovers, nativists, xenophobes, misogynists, homophobes, and the extreme right wing.
Americans pretend there is no racism and yet the democrats have lost the white vote since civil rights. Coincidence. Trump's Mexican and immigration policies appeal to white Americans today. Reasons abound, see video at bottom. See this too, read it. Dog Whistle Politics
For the Record: For Trump, everything’s going to be alt-right
"Kritzer’s observation speaks volumes about the incoherence of the reactionary politics that are driving the Puppy campaign — and, in national politics, the Trump campaign. Despite all the claims to make America “great,” the actual behavior looks quite a bit like kneecapping the aspirations of women, people of color, and queer people so that straight white male mediocrities don’t have to deal with the competition." http://www.salon.com/2016/08/23/the...-hijacked-by-trumpian-style-culture-warriors/

It's something the left made up to scare their fellow leftists

There is no such thing as the alt right. It is a particularly gruesome manifestation of Hillary's paranoia about a "vast right wing conspiracy" that she has been claiming for years has been following her and her husband around and is responsible for all their difficulties. The term keeps popping up. Never heard it before the end of the primary. What is it?
So one has to ask, when Senator Clinton voted for the same border fence she now claims she opposes and criticized Mexico and illegal immigrants from Mexico in much the same way Trump has done, was she a member of the alt right? The term keeps popping up. I hesitate to say they are Trump supporters because many of his supporters are simply Conservatives who feel they have no choice and are holding their nose because Hillary is so deplorable. But the rabid "anti-Cruz" obnoxious loudmouths who are also known as "populist-nationalists" ...THOSE people are the alt right.
I'm fine with the designation, as long as it's understood these people are not affiliated with Conservatism in any way. They actually have more in common with the radical progressive left. From their Saul Alinsky tactics to their love of Big Government.
Now, you have to wonder, who were they before they were "alt right"? Many of them were calling themselves "moderates" and supported the establishment type republicans and some of them were masquerading rather convincingly as conservatives. Because of their strong nativist identity, they also seem to attract the fringe racist element.
You will learn here that it doesn't exist. Just like the KKK is dead and gone. No white supremacists here. Nope. The term keeps popping up. Never heard it before the end of the primary. What is it?
Certainly there are extremists on the right and the left, and Hillary's recent efforts to incite African Americans against the police marks her as one of them, but there the term alt right is an effort to make voters believe they are part of a vast right wing conspiracy that doesn't exist. Hitler, Erdogan and the old white southern politicians used the same tactics as Hillary to gain popular support with their conspiracy theories. You will learn here that it doesn't exist.
