What Happened to The Mall?

Why would I want to go to a place were every store left I can order the same thing on-line and not have to put-up with 'the great unwashed", much less feral utes that frequent them?

That said old malls would make for kick-ass indoor gun ranges. :)

On the other hand, some time more recent than this, my wife and I paid a visit to the Arden Fair mall and found it to be in a very different condition than the Sunrise Mall. Arden Fair was very much alive, nearly all the storefronts open and active, and lots and lots of people.

I guess some malls are doing better than others.

^^^ Knoxville used to have two malls. Only one is still there now.

God bless you always!!!

Holly

P.S. My city still has one, but it most definitely is not what it used to be anymore. It used to have Sears and JCPenny, but now it has Kohl's, Belk, TJ Maxx, and Dick's Sporting Goods.

anchors are a thing of the past...they must figure out a way to exist without them...pennys is barely there..belks is fighting for its life...macys is nearly gone
The only mall we used to have in this town is now headquarters for the Prison system. Go figger! Fortunately, we have a fabric store in old downtown. I'm just gonna faint! :huddle:

We moved here, at our current home, in 1995. At that time I would say that within 30 or so miles there were 4 decent malls.

One of them is now torn down, the other one is close. Another has become a beacon for gangs and crime, and the fourth is the biggest, most expensive mall in the entire state--like a destination mall. So that one is doing okay for now.

Oddly, outdoor malls are more popular. Which makes little sense to me because about six months of the year or so, no one wants to be outside here.

I'm not talking about my specific local mall because I will not disclose that information, but the mall in general. I went there today with one of my friends and it basically looked like a ghost town. Just lost two of its restaurants recently and one a while back.

I think that the mall and the movie theater are probably on their way out though because everybody shops online now and streams. It's also cheaper that way as well. I'm also not sure about where you live, but our mall has basically turned into a place of entertainment rather than shopping.

There are a few "dead mall" channels on Youtube.
They are nice to watch, and sad at the same time.

Here's one of the channels I watch............

I only shop at "free shipping" online malls. That way, you really know how much something is going to cost BEFORE you buy. Or do you? :dunno: It's really easy to cheat people online by not sending them merchandise and retreating to the neighbor's house on the opposite side of the planet. Plus, you can count on it that someone will use your information to steal the house underneath yer feet at lightning speed. :( Lotsa cheaters out there. I get hacked a couple of times a week unless I get a new state driver's license, change my name, get a divorce, move someplace else, get a new social security number, or convert all my assets to cash and gold.

Oh, and did I mention it? I don't shop online anymore.
I got hacked one too many times, so
a company named Telechek threw me under the bus
even though I have never stolen anything from any one,
Have never been arrested, because I never

and spent my life doing for others, mainly handicapped kids, orphans

begin to understand.

The mall that was closest to me has been torn down and replaced with an Amazon fulfillment center which means I'll get my orders delivered even faster.

I recently ordered a Stephen King book about this time of the morning from Amazon. I was reading it early afternoon. I have had pizza take longer.

I had read a few years ago, that the big mall owners like DeBartolo owned malls, knew the malls for shopping was on their way out as they stood, and the future of malls would rely on entertainment.... Looks like they will be moving in that direction?

Yeah those big open air shopping centers always seem to have a movie theater and at least 4 chain restaurants. I like that I can go have a few beers before and after a movie without driving to two or 3 different places.

Those were the good ole days...

Not necessarily what the articles I read on it ....was talking about... It was more on the lines of circus like rides for very young kids and for teens things like Wi-Fi internet gaming spots and cafe and gathering spots to sit, drink and eat, and order your new outfit off the net, and walking down to the smaller footprint dept. or smaller independent store to simply pick it up... And all stores being more interactive with the net and your phone somehow....?

In my area our mall is going under, less a miracle...a car dealerships owner wanted to buy it and the parking lot to put all of his 5 different dealerships on to one spot with an entertainment area of go carts, and carnival type rides....they lost the bid though and some other mall developer bought it....

Don't make Telecheck mad at you by defending your party's members. Just sayin'.... :cranky:

Yes. I do not shop online unless I cannot find something at the price I'm willing to pay at the store. Or, I can't find it at the stores around me at all. Luckily, I live in a metro area, so the stores are numerous. But.....every rare once in a while, there is something I can't find in the stores and have to go online.

Amazon and Ebay are my "last ditch efforts" to try and buy something I need, IF I cannot find it in the stores here.

I'm with you on the tech part though. Us older people weren't raised on tech, we were raised to "go play outside until dinner".........not "go to your room and play a video game".

My first two computers got viruses because they didn't have proper protection. I did some research, and found that Norton Anti Virus software was the best for me. I've been using Norton to protect my computer for many decades now, and it has never failed me.

Norton also has expanded their computer protection to VPN, online shopping protection, and "dark web" protection......for extra charges, but still........

I've also had Paypay as my online shopping "bank" since 2000. I've never had a problem with them. Along with my actual bank where my paychecks are deposited, Paypal, and Norton, I've never been hacked or had my info stolen.......to my knowledge.

In fact, if they want to steal my identity, they are welcome to it.......LOL. The 2 cents in my checking account and all my medical bills are waiting there for them!!!! ROFL

And I think Norton has caught at least 3 attempts over the years of a hacker trying to hack my personal pc, and it stopped them cold. A warning will popup and tell you there is an attempt being made to hack your pc, and give you some choices about what you want to do. Usually I just let Norton do its thing........and I've never been sorry because of it. Norton is probably the most expensive, but I look for online coupons and discounts every year when I have to renew, so I usually get it for half price. And their safety programs just keep getting better and better.

It's getting harder and harder to shop in stores though, as most places aren't carrying specific items anymore, and just carrying general items. A lot of stores have cut down on the range of products they have as well, which has made it harder to shop in physical stores as well.

I've learned how to keep my computer "clean" from bugs, viruses, and other such hacks over the years, and so far I haven't had any kind of attack attempt in the past 15 years.

As far as tech goes, I really hate it. Me and tech do NOT get along. But, I've had to learn to adapt, because thats the way the world works now. It's a pain in the ass, but there it is.

Shipping is outragious nowadays as well.

I look for bigger discount prices over shipping charges though. That way I know I'm not having to pay extravegant amounts for shipping, if any at all.

Most online places will give you "free shipping" if you buy like over $20 in merch. Thats all well and fine, but I rarely need more than what I am looking to buy, so I've have to become a very good investigative shopper.

The things you have to REALLY look for now, when shopping online is RETURNS, and WHERE the item is being shipped FROM, as well as where it's manufactured. I try VERY hard not to buy anything made in China, and I will do some exhaustive online research on what I need to buy before I buy it, so I don' t give China any of my money if I don't have to. And if that involves a slightly higher cost, the so be it.

You've got to make sure your merch is coming from a REPUTABLE online seller that is REGISTERED as a business here in the USA and has an actual PHYSICAL address here in the USA.............whether its offices, a warehouse, or manufacturing facilities.
That way, if you have a problem with them, you can use the BBB, online FBI protection, or the Consumer Protection office to help you with a return or refund, or scam.

If you buy from overseas companies, you are screwed if you have a problem with it, because they aren't covered by US consumer protections.

I'm old school. I like to SEE what I'm buying, FEEL it, and if its clothes or shoes, TRY THEM ON before I buy.
It also gets me out of the house, which is becoming a rarity nowadays, because its getting harder for me to get around, and I don't like being cooped up inside all the time.

I have stand alone stores I can go to for that.
