2) Hopes of permanent government employment?
3) Welfare programs/free ride?
4) Social programs/social security etc?
5) Hopes of political power?
6) Light workload for big pay?
7) Government worship of the collective whole?
8) Union protection/can't be fired?
9) Lucrative retirement?

I think what fuels big government more then anything else is welfare for corporations. Take this latest example of giving banks control of food stamps in several states. These banks are making hundreds of millions of dollars each month off of this government program.
This is just one example. The common misconception is that the 'social safety net' is the problem, but the real problem is all the corporations that have there dirty fingers in the treasury. Federal money for the department of agriculture (which is where foodstamps come from) is like 1% of the federal budget. Not exactly the big elephant in the room, pun intended.
