“We are providing this humanitarian relief to Haitians already present in the United States given the conditions that existed in their home country as of June 3, 2024,” said secretary Mayorkas.
The TPS extension published today cites Haiti’s “simultaneous economic, security, political, and health crises,” as some of the reasons why the Biden Administration moved to extend this program.
As for Springfield, specifically, City Manager Bryan Heck said the town attracted migrants because of its affordable housing and job openings. The city was in turmoil for years, but had a turnaround when manufacturing picked up.
This expansion will apply to Haitians who were in the United States on June 3 and will last until Feb. 3, 2026. Anyone arriving after June 3 would not qualify. Separately, Mayorkas also extended the Temporary Protected Status of an estimated 200,000 Haitians who already had it. Their extension will also last through Feb. 3, 2026.
